Ange Postecoglou has guided Tottenham Hotspur to a trophy after 17 long years
Ange Postecoglou has guided Tottenham Hotspur to the UEFA Europa League success over Manchester United.
Spurs had gone over 17 years without winning any trophies and were often a butt of jokes for fans of rival clubs for their unfortunate luck with silverware. Those days came to an end on May 21 when the Lilywhites beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao. The only goal of an otherwise cagey affair came from Brennan Johnson in the first half after a deflection off Luke Shaw.
It was a night that will live long in the memory, in the club’s rich history, because of the togetherness, fight, passion, spirit, and drama that unfolded at the San Mames Stadium. With the win in midweek, Ange Postecoglou fulfilled his promise of always winning trophies in his second season in charge of clubs.
As far as the Greek-Aussie tactician’s job is concerned, he has etched his name in the club’s history books by achieving the astounding feat. He has been on the cusp of being sacked for weeks and months. The Europa League competition apparently kept him in the job and he has managed to win the competition against all odds.

Postecoglou was delighted after the game, and he made his feeling clear in his post-match presser. When asked is he hungry to drive the club forward, the 59-year-old said (h/t Football London):
“Very. Because we’ve got a really young group of players. And you can talk to them about success and what it means, but until they feel it, it doesn’t become real.
“I’ve got no doubt that all those boys tonight, having this feeling will want it again. And to get it again they’re going to have to make similar sacrifices. They’ve climbed the mountain now. They know what it takes to get to where we are. I think that does, it accelerates the opportunities to build a team who can be successful, and play at a high standard for years to come.
“As I said yesterday, I still feel there’s a lot of work to be done, I think that’s quite obvious. But not as much work as people may think. People can bang on about 20 league defeats and where we are, but they’re missing the point of what we’re trying to build, or what I’m trying to do anyway. I really feel that tonight can be a great platform for us to kick on.”

It is fair to say Ange has proved his critics wrong, forcing some of the sections of media to eat the humble pie. The Australian has done what he promised back in September last year and given the fans great joy.

Nothing can change the fact that Tottenham have been awful throughout the Premier League campaign, and 21 defeats alone in the league is in itself a sackable offence. The Europa League success salvages a torrid domestic season, though, giving the club Champions League football to compete in next term.
Daniel Levy now has a tough decision to make in regards to Ange’s future. Our gaffer has delivered a European trophy, the ball is now in Levy’s court.
