Tottenham eye loan move for Chelsea star with 19G/A in 2024/25

Tottenham are planning to make a loan move with a buy option for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku

Ange Postecoglou finished his second season in charge of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with the UEFA Europa League Trophy and a 17th-placed Premier League finish.

The North Londoners won the Europa League by beating Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao last week. Winning the competition also ensured Champions League qualification for next season and a huge cash entry into the club.

However, the Europa League success cannot overshadow the disastrous Premier League campaign endured by Spurs. Following the 4-1 trouncing at the hands of Brighton on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, it meant Ange Postecoglou’s side lost a staggering 22 times in 38 fixtures. The league being the Lilywhites’ bread and butter, it is simply not good enough as they finished just a spot above the three relegated sides.

It is fair to say the squad needs revamping in the summer. Football Insider senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke claims that Tottenham are set to prioritise a move for a wide forward in the upcoming summer transfer window. And Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku has emerged as a target for Spurs.

Christopher Nkunku is set to leave Chelsea this summer as he is no longer part of Enzo Maresca’s first-team plans. The Blues are preparing to accept offers for the forward which they will then use to reinvest in their squad as they aim to back Enzo Maresca in the transfer market after he guided the club back to the Champions League.

Now, according to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham are showing the most willingness to sign Chelsea outcast Christopher Nkunku. They are ready to negotiate an initial loan, with a €45m option to buy the France international and the ‘proposal could be attractive to Chelsea’.

Nkunku has failed to hit the lofty heights at Chelsea since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2023. He endured an injury-hit debut campaign at Stamford Bridge that limited the forward to only 14 appearances. The 27-year-old showed his quality this past 2024/25 campaign with 14 goals and five assists in 42 outings across all competitions, but never really managed to establish himself in Maresca’s first XI.

Should Daniel Levy make a move for Chelsea outcast Christopher Nkunku?

At 27, the France international wants to play regularly and that doesn’t look possible under Maresca at Chelsea. Spurs are planning to provide him with that opportunity, with the aforementioned report adding that the deal ‘represents an opportunity to strengthen their attack without a significant immediate financial commitment’.

There is no doubting Nkunku’s quality and the impact he can have in the team if given regular opportunities. Given his versatility to operate out wide and centrally as both No.9 and No.10, he fits the criteria of signing Tottenham want to make this summer. Plus, his Champions League experience of the past could come in handy for the North Londoners who are set to rub shoulders with the elite European teams next season.

Thus, this move actually makes sense from many angles, but if the Tottenham chiefs can agree a loan deal with a buy option lesser than €45m, it would represent an excellent agreement.
