Tottenham backed to sell first team star if he fails to pen new deal

Atletico Madrid are planning to open talks with Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of Cristian Romero

Tottenham Hotspur managed to end the 2024/25 season on a high note by lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy. This ensured the return of Champions League football to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next term after a three-year absence.

Winning the Europa League was a massive achievement from Ange Postecoglou and his boys, but that cannot mask their performances and results in the Premier League. A 17th placed finish is simply unacceptable, and had Spurs not been alive in Europe, Ange Postecoglou could have been sacked long ago.

Changes are expected to happen in the squad in order to improve from last season’s disaster in the Premier League. The North Londoners may end up losing a couple of their key performers, and it looks like qualification for next season’s Champions League will not be enough to make them stay.

One of those players is Cristian Romero. Question marks keep surrounding the centre-back’s future, with Atletico Madrid keen to bring him to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Internal talks have already been held between him and coach Diego Simeone, as Atletico Madrid look to push for the player’s signature.

What is the latest update from Fabrizio Romano on Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur?
Fabrizio Romano drops latest update on Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur

Cristian Romero, who endured an injury-ravaged 2024/25 season, dropped a Man of the Match display in the Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao last week. The Argentinean displayed his leadership, grit, physicality and organisation skills to help Spurs overcome Man United and taste European glory under Ange Postecoglou’s tutelage.

Atletico have identified Romero as their leading centre-back target for the summer transfer window, and are planning to open talks with Tottenham soon. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin is expected to take charge of the negotiations for the Spanish side.

Now, Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham feels that Tottenham will either agree a new contract or allow Romero to leave this summer.

“Romero was outstanding in the Europa League final,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He got us over the line against Manchester United. I know Romero has got a young family, he’s got a good group of friends at Tottenham, too.

“It will be interesting to see if we can convince him to stay. I think the only way we had a chance was by securing UEFA Champions League football, and now that we have that, I think there is a greater chance of Romero staying.

“However, if he does stay, he needs to renew his contract, because he only has two years left on his deal. Therefore, there will be an agreement this summer, one way or another.”

Can Daniel Levy persuade Cristian Romero to stay at Tottenham amid Atletico Madrid interest?

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy does not want to lose Romero this summer. They plan to start talks with the South American star to guarantee his continuity at N17 at least for one more season.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

The 27-year-old still has two years left on his contract, and with the club set to participate in the Champions League next term, Levy has the tools to persuade him to stay. However, if Romero still remains hellbent on joining Atletico, Spurs will be forced into negotiations. That said, the club has to be proactive and sign a quality central defender who can be Romero’s potential replacement if he ends up leaving N17.
