“Will be under pressure”- Chris Sutton warns incoming Tottenham manager about the challenges at N17; UCL qualification will be key

Thomas Frank is set to swap Brentford for Tottenham in the coming days

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has taken the club to new heights off the field. The amazing financials, brilliant infrastructure, and huge sponsorship deals have made the Lilywhites a commercial club. But the decision on the pitch have always been a second priority for the club chairman during his time at N17. The lack of resources to succeed where it matters the most has also left the fans frustrated.

The North London club finally managed to break the curse and win its first major trophy in 17 years last month under Ange Postecoglou’s management. Spurs exceeded expectations and won the Europa League in spectacular fashion to end the club’s long-standing trophy drought. Big Ange also walked the talk and delivered on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season at a club.

And what came next at N17 following the Europa League success? The Lilywhites decided to sack the Australian tactician just two weeks after the historic achievement. The European success could have been the perfect way for Levy to connect with the fans and start a new chapter at Hotspur Way. But the club chairman thought otherwise, and questionably relieved Ange Postecoglou from his duties.

Incoming boss Thomas Frank will find life tough at Tottenham next season

Managing a club like Tottenham is not for weak-hearted characters. The Lilywhites are under constant scrutiny and it is believed that Daniel Levy wants any new manager to focus on finishing in the top half of the Premier League than win any type of silverware. Now, Spurs are on the verge of hiring Brentford boss Thomas frank as their new manager for the upcoming season.

However, Chris Sutton has issued a warning to the Danish tactician following his switch to N17. Speaking to the BBC, Sutton said,

“That is how things work at the club that Frank is walking into. Thomas Frank has done a brilliant job at Brentford, but this is a whole different kettle of fish. Because of the expectation at Tottenham, Frank won’t get time to get his feet under the table. He will be under pressure from the off. Postecoglou has just won them their first major European trophy for 41 years and has gone.”

The ex-Chelsea player added,

“So already you have to wonder what does Frank need to do this season to keep his job? The aim for Frank will be to keep them in the Champions League, and whether that is by making the top four or five, that is not going to be easy. That is a big ask for this squad, to compete on both fronts. We know this Tottenham team is better than 17th place, because they finished fifth in Postecoglou’s first year, but other Premier League teams have improved since then.”

Chris Sutton suggested that managing Tottenham is tougher than managing Brentford and Thomas Frank will be under pressure from the get-go. The ex-player insisted that Frank will have to aim for Champions League qualification next season via the Premier League. Sutton pointed out that it will not be an easy task for the Danish manager as the Lilywhites finished 17th in the league this season, but acknowledged that the squad is good enough to achieve top five next year.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

But the first order of business for Thomas Frank will be to get the house back in order at N17. It was reported last week that the players were planning to revolt against the club’s hierarchy following Ange Postecoglou’s departure. So, the Danish tactician will first have to get the players back on board and make them believe in the project for next season.
