Tottenham Hotspur are facing a battle to keep hold of Cristian Romero amid interest from La Liga club Atletico Madrid
Tottenham confirmed the appointment of Thomas Frank as their new head coach following Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal earlier this week.
Ange Postecoglou has left behind a decent squad for Thomas Frank to inherit. The Danish tactician will want to rebuild the squad as per his own image, trying to make the North Londoners competitive on multiple fronts next season. The first order of business for the new Spurs boss will be to get the players back on board and kickstart a new era at White Hart Lane.
There are several Tottenham players whose futures remain up in the air. One of them is of Cristian Romero. The Argentinean international has been long linked with a departure from Spurs. He has already expressed his desire to play in La Liga, with Atletico Madrid holding concrete interest in the central defender.

Cristian Romero, who endured an injury-ravaged 2024/25 season, delivered a Man of the Match display in the Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao in May. The 27-year-old showcased his leadership, grit, physicality and experience to help Spurs beat Man United 1-0.
A world-class defender, it is therefore no surprise that he is wanted by Atletico Madrid. However, credible journalist Fabrizio Romano says the situation between Romero and Atletico are quite now and Daniel Levy and Tottenham’s decision-makers will try their very best to keep him in the squad for another season after qualifying for the Champions League.
“Quiet situation now, I think Spurs will really try their best to keep him at least for this season,” Fabrizio Romano revealed on his GIVEMESPORT transfer newsletter.

Romero has been a key player for Tottenham ever since he arrived from Atalanta in 2022. He has forged a strong partnership with Micky van de Ven at the back, and when the duo are on the pitch, Tottenham have looked defensively robust and organised.

Tottenham are wary of the Argentinean’s desire to join Atletico and play in La Liga, but if there is anyone who can stop him from leaving Spurs, it is Levy. While former Brentford and Leicester City manager Martin Allen has backed the North Londoners to demand a minimum of £60m for his services with two years left on his contract, Levy must do everything possible to keep Romero in a summer that is primed for a rebuild.
