Tottenham set to land French star below buyout clause; €45m deal agreed

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur have decided to sign Mathys Tel permanently from Bayern Munich

It looks like Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich are very close to agreeing on a deal that would see Mathys Tel make a permanent move to White Hart Lane.

Whilst signing him on loan, Spurs managed to negotiate an option with Bayern Munich to buy the young forward on a permanent basis in the summer for around €60m. They fended off competition from Manchester United and Chelsea for his signature during the winter transfer window, bagging one of the highly-rated young talents’ signature in the process.

However, Mathys Tel did not enjoy a dazzling six-month loan spell with the North Londoners. The forward played 20 times for Tottenham, netting three goals and an assist in the process. Now, the Frenchman could make his stay with Spurs permanent, as Daniel Levy looks to strengthen the squad for the 2025/26 season.

Going by his performances, Spurs bosses were reluctant to pay the €60m to sign Tel from Bayern Munich and wanted to renegotiate a fee with the German champions. And they have seemingly done a good job to negotiate that price down.

According to German publication BILD (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Tottenham are set to reach an agreement for €35m fee along with the €10m that Bayern will have received from Tel’s loan spell that lasted for the second half of the 2024/25 season. The France youth international will join the North Londoners permanently and become a part of new boss Thomas Frank’s project.

Tottenham were always interested in signing Tel owing to his talent and potential to grow. It was all down to the cost of operation as the Hotspur Way chiefs were never going to pay the €60m buy option in his contract. In reality, the youngster’s performances did not warrant the Premier League club to pay a big fee, so it was all about trying to get him on a discounted price.

Mathys Tel might not be at Tottenham next season after a poor loan spell at N17.

And Daniel Levy and Co. have done a brilliant job, if the latest reports are to be believed. Tel did show flashes of promise across 20 appearances on loan, and for someone extremely talented, versatile, pacey, agile and tricky with huge potential, €35m fee in today’s age and market is a snip.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Currently, Tel is participating in the European Under-21 championship for France along with his Spurs teammate Wilson Odobert in Slovakia. After the permanent acquisition of Kevin Danso from RC Lens, lets hope Spurs wrap up the Tel deal quickly and kickstart the Frank era.
