Bryan Gil bemoans late Tottenham decision that cost him Valencia switch
Bryan Gil’s representatives are facing a pivotal summer. At 24, the winger has already played for seven different teams, including two stints at Sevilla. Most of these moves have been temporary, a cycle of promising starts followed by setbacks, whether due to injuries, tactical changes, or a drop in form.
Last year appeared to offer a clean break, with hopes of a permanent exit from Tottenham. Instead, he was loaned to Girona, a short-term fix rather than a fresh start. With his contract at Spurs running until 2026, this summer feels decisive. One way or another, a resolution is needed.
According to Super Deporte, Gil recently revealed on a Spanish podcast that he had his heart set on returning to Valencia after his first loan spell there. He was packed and ready to go, fully expecting the move to happen, only for Tottenham to block the deal at the last minute. It was a decision he disagreed with, making it clear he had no intention of staying.
“I didn’t decide to stay. In fact, I was going to go back to Valencia for the whole year. In the negotiations they told me it was practically a done deal. Tottenham needed a few days to close it, but it was 99% done, they had already spoken to the sporting director.
“But at the last minute they told me no, that I had to stay. It wasn’t on my part that I wanted to stay, I wanted to leave and they didn’t let me. I had already packed my bags, I was 99% sure I was going to leave.”
Since his arrival in London, Bryan Gil has been loaned out three times, to Valencia, Sevilla, and most recently Girona. Yet none of these spells have provided the stability or momentum he needs. Now, Tottenham’s sporting management is looking to recoup part of the investment they made when they signed him from Sevilla in 2021.
The situation has reached a point where it can no longer be deferred. Gil has made it clear: he doesn’t want another season of uncertainty. His frustration isn’t posturing, it’s genuine, born of years spent without a clear role or consistent form. But the question must be asked—where does the blame truly lie? Is it entirely the club’s inability to integrate him, or does his own inconsistency and inability to fully seize opportunities also play a part?

In many of his loan spells, Bryan Gil showed early promise but gradually faded, an all-too-familiar pattern that has not only stunted his growth but also damaged his market value. With a contract running until 2026, Spurs are approaching a critical window. If they don’t sell him this summer, they risk watching his valuation decline further in 2025. A contract renewal seems highly unlikely, leaving a transfer as the most practical option.
Thomas Frank, now officially at the helm, could theoretically offer Gil one final chance. But to what end? The player has made it clear he no longer believes in the project, and the fanbase has largely moved on. Giving him another run now would feel like a half-hearted gesture rather than a strategic move.
Selling him this summer makes far more sense, it allows Spurs to recover some of their investment and gives Gil a fresh start, ideally at a club that can offer him the stability and role he craves. At this point, the story has run its course. Tottenham should turn the page, reinvest the proceeds, and let Gil find the continuity that London never gave him.
