“Cholo calls him”- Atletico Madrid manager ‘desperate’ to land £51m Tottenham defender amid uncertain future at N17

Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero has been in the headlines for quite some time now. The Argentina international has been one of the standout players for the Lilywhites in recent years. And it is fair to say that the 27-year-old has matured a lot during his stay at N17. He has also played a crucial part in helping the club lift its first major trophy in 17 years.

There is no surprise that Spurs are a better team with Romero in it. After arriving from Atalanta in 2022, the centre-back has shown time and again why he is considered to be one of the best defenders in the world right now. Although this season was a bit of a ‘stop-start’ campaign for the Argentine, he was still instrumental in helping the North London club carve out positive results when it mattered the most.

The 27-year-old’s performance in the Europa League final was enough to show that Spurs are dependent on his experience to lead the backline during the big games. His do-or-die attitude was clear to see as the Lilywhites managed to keep a clean sheet in the final after a solid defensive display.

Atletico Madrid trying their best to sign Tottenham star Cristian Romero

Tottenham are well prepared to lose some of their best players in the summer after the club endured a disastrous domestic campaign. One of those players might be Cristian Romero, as the Argentina international has revealed time and again that he intends to play in Spain in the near future. That has caught the attention of Atletico Madrid, as they look to land the 27-year-old for next season.

The Spurs No.17 has been one of the standout performers for the Lilywhites in recent years. And Atletico Madrid’s interest in him as considered to be ‘deadly serious.’ As per Spanish journalist Ruben Uria (via El Desmarque),

“I know that Cholo calls Cuti Romero almost every day to see if he can convince him. They (Tottenham) are going to ask a lot. €58-60 million (£49-51m) for this player, which is a lot of money for a centre back. But I don’t know why Atleti would go after him. We’ll see how the summer goes.”

This just shows that the La Liga giants are not messing around and actually want to land the 27-year-old in the summer. It was reported earlier that Spurs have no intentions of losing their best defender. And the Lilywhites will do everything they can to keep him at N17 for one more season as they look to kickstart a new era under Thomas Frank. Also, the Danish tactician needs a reliable defender at the back to navigate the defence, and losing Cristian Romero would be a blow for the team.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the ex-Atalanta star. Tottenham are well prepared to sign a replacement; in case Romero leaves the club for pastures new in the coming weeks. The North London club is linked with a move for Lazio star Mario Gila, and Daniel Levy believes that he is the ideal defender to replace the Argentine international.
