Multiple reasons hindering Tottenham this summer as fans await first signing

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to sign a single player this summer transfer window

The summer looked different for Tottenham Hotspur fans. After winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League, there was excitement about seeing a club determined to truly grow. Everything seemed to indicate that Daniel Levy would open his chequebook to bring the Spurs closer to their long-awaited dream of competing in the Premier League and returning to a European final. The arrival of Thomas Frank, a coach respected for his work at Brentford, further fuelled expectations that no time would be wasted in building a competitive squad. However, the reality has been very different.

Tottenham have not signed any new players in this summer transfer window, beyond completing previously agreed deals such as the permanent signings of Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso, or the arrival of Luka Vuskovic. This is in stark contrast to the activity of other big clubs such as City and Chelsea.

Football.london has reported that part of the explanation lies in the fact that the club remain richer in assets than in liquidity. The lack of new external investment, despite record revenues from the new stadium, leaves Levy with the need to sell or turn to ENIC to inject capital, as happened in 2022. In addition, the Spurs’ salary structure remains lower than that of their direct rivals, making it difficult to compete for ambitious goals without an attractive financial offer.

How much of Tottenham’s transfer inactivity is due to financial constraints versus Thomas Frank’s need to assess the squad he inherited from Ange Postecoglou?

Added to this is the arrival of Thomas Frank, who needs time to get to know the players he inherited from Ange Postecoglou. The Dane did not start working with the entire squad, including the internationals, until this week. And as if that were not enough, the problem of a lack of players trained at the club persists, limiting the margin for registering new signings in the Champions League without first releasing several players.

There are also cases such as Son Heung-min, who needs to decide his future, and rumours of a possible sale of Cristian Romero. Finally, the lack of determination to close deals such as that of Mohammed Kudus makes it clear that indecision continues to set the tone, perhaps waiting for a discount that may not come.

From our point of view, fans have reason to be concerned. The club talks about competing in the Premier League and the Champions League, but without significant reinforcements, those words ring hollow. Money matters, and Spurs cannot hide their lack of financial muscle forever. Frank needs time to assess his squad, but planning also requires foresight. Prudence with players like Kudus may be seen as smart, but history shows that other, more agile clubs are moving ahead. If Tottenham want to be truly great, they must act with more decisiveness or risk falling short again.
