Tottenham prepare for talks with Liverpool star’s entourage as summer move beckons

Tottenham have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott

Last week turned out to be an eventful one for Tottenham Hotspur fans.

Spurs made their first marquee signing of the summer transfer window in the form of Mohammed Kudus, who arrived from West Ham United on a £55m deal. They also managed to trigger the £60m release clause for Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White, surprising the fans massively. The deal to land the England international is far from done, though, as Nottingham Forest have lodged a complaint to the Premier League over an illegal approach to the player.

While a deal for Gibbs-White remains in jeopardy, the North Londoners are not wasting time and continue scouring the market for reinforcements. As per latest reports, Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott. In fact, they enquired about the young Englishman amid his likely exit from Anfield.

Harvey Elliott is looking to end his six-year stay at Liverpool. Despite him being part of the club since 2019, the left-footed midfielder has never really managed to establish himself as a regular starter for the Reds. Under Arne Slot, he clocked just 360 minutes of Premier League action after returning from a fractured foot last season.

As a result, the 22-year-old, who was pivotal in England’s European Under-21 Championship success in Slovakia and was crowned Player of the tournament recently, wants to move on to pastures new to revive his career.

Tottenham join Newcastle United in Harvey Elliott race

Now, according to former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers scout Mick Brown, Tottenham have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign Elliott. They are set to hold talks with the Liverpool star’s representatives. There is no shortage of interest in the Euro Under-21 champion, with Fulham, Brighton and several Bundesliga clubs also vying for his signature.

“There’s no shortage of interest in Harvey Elliott,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.

“Newcastle and Tottenham are the latest names I’ve heard, both of them are going to test the waters and see what it would take to bring him in. They’ll speak to his agent and find out what he’s asking for and what Liverpool are going to want.

“Both clubs will know what he can do, they’ll know the pros and the cons, and they’ll weigh those up against his price tag before making a move.

“He doesn’t have much of a place at Liverpool anymore, so they’re ready to let him go. It could be one that drags on until late in the window, because he’s going to have to consider all of his options before making a final decision.”

Do Spurs need Harvey Elliott?

Tottenham have strengthened their right flank with the acquisition of Kudus. The Ghanaian can play in a variety of attacking positions but he is expected to challenge Brennan Johnson for a place in the starting XI.

Then there is also Dejan Kulusevski, who was transformed into a central midfielder from an inconsistent winger by Ange Postecoglou last season. Being a left-footed player, Kulusevski can play out wide and through the middle, so all eyes will be on Thomas Frank as to how he uses the Swede in his system.

Considering Spurs are now well-stocked as far as the options on the right flank are concerned, there is no immediate requirement for a player like Elliott in Frank’s squad. Instead, Frank and Co. must look to splash the cash on a combative, ball-winning No.6 who can bring much-needed balance to the side.
