Championship sides lining up for Tottenham sensation; versatile talent can do with regular playtime

George Abbott impressed on loan at Notts County last season and could leave Tottenham for another temporary spell

New Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank is getting his players back from the summer break as he prepares for the pre-season. The Danish tactician is close to taking charge of his first game for the Spurs as they face Reading on Saturday.

The North Londoners have a mix of experienced pros and prodigious young talents whom Thomas Frank will be buzzing to work with, while new signings such as Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus should be raring to make an impression. Also, there are players who have returned from successful loan spells, hoping to catch the new head coach’s eye.

One of them is George Abbott. The Spurs academy talent spent the last season on loan with Notts County in League Two. He won many admirers in his first taste of senior football, with the 19-year-old’s consistent displays at the base of Notts County’s midfield being crucial to their promotion push.

Operating largely as a holding midfielder, George Abbott registered 13 goal contributions for Notts County. For his eye-catching displays, he was being nominated for the League Two Player of the Year award. The Tottenham academy graduate won the EFL Goal of the Season Award for his excellent strike against Accrington Stanley back in January.

John Wenham feels Championship clubs are lining up loan move for George Abbott

Abbott, who has drawn comparisons with Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, is among the young academy talents expected to feature for Spurs in the pre-season games. Reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham feels he could impress Frank in the pre-season and catch the attention of several Championship clubs.

“He had an outstanding loan last year at Notts County,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“I imagine Championship clubs are waiting to take him on loan straight away if that option opens up. He can play right back or centre midfield equally well.

“He would have impressed by winning the race at Tottenham. Jamie Donley was also in the top four. Therefore, those two seem to be at the top of the pile in terms of wanting to impress Frank.”

Tottenham must loan out George Abbott again

After impressing at League Two level, Abbott’s confidence must be high and he will want to play regularly again. At Tottenham, chances of getting regular opportunities next season are slim given the talent they possess in the middle of the park. And having got a taste of men’s football, it would make no sense for the teenager to warm the benches at N17 and only make appearances in cup competitions.

Thus, the Lilywhites must try to find a loan in the Championship for Abbott. A couple of steps up the English football pyramid would be a challenge the talented youngster will relish.
