Tottenham want to address the No.6 problem by signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher

So far, Tottenham Hotspur have managed to sign Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus in this ongoing summer transfer window. They have also turned Mathys Tel’s loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal.

The North Londoners have triggered a £60million release clause in Gibbs-White’s contract at Nottingham Forest, but the deal has come on standby. In addition to Gibbs-White, they remain open to signing players who are versatile in nature, create chances and score goals. This has been evidenced by the Lilywhites’ interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Tottenham were keen on signing Conor Gallagher before he moved to Atletico Madrid last summer. The central midfielder went on to enjoy a decent debut season in Spain, scoring three goals and registering as many assists in 32 La Liga games.

Despite not being a regular starter under Diego Simeone, the England international remains happy at Atletico Madrid. But, Gallagher is aware that he will further find it difficult to cement his spot in Simeone’s XI after Johnny Cardoso and Thiago Almada’s latest acquisitions, and as the World Cup is happening next year, he is open to leaving the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium after only a season.

Thomas Frank admires Conor Gallagher’s talent

According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in signing Gallagher, with our gaffer Thomas Frank an admirer of his talent. He says the North London club are looking for a No.6 this summer, and the 25-year-old could “fill the bill perfectly”.

“Gallagher at this point is happy at Madrid, very happy, he has thoroughly enjoyed working with Simeone and feels he made the right choice in moving,” Bailey exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He does have the England situation in the back of his mind, I am told, and feelers have been put out by intermediaries to check on his potential options, but as said, ideally he stays put.”

Would Gallagher be a good fit as a No.6 for Tottenham?

Spurs were overrun and outworked in midfield multiple times last season, with Ange Postecoglou’s side lacking an anchor. Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur lacked the tactical discipline and game-reading sense to operate as a No.6, thereby, leaving the team exposed on the opposition counter-attacks.

If Frank is eyeing a No.6, Gallagher, though, ideally does not fit into that role. The ex-Chelsea can play in that role but he is effective as a No.8 or box-crashing No.10. It is in the final third where the Epson-born star’s talents truly flourish. In that regard, a move for Gallagher should be avoided.

For the No.6 role, Tottenham would be wise to accelerate their interest in Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha after holding fresh talks with him last week.
