Opportunity for Tottenham to capitalize as Newcastle United falter with bid for 19-goal star

Will Tottenham Hotspur seize the opportunity to land Newcastle United target Yoane Wissa?

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a golden opportunity to swoop in for one of the Premier League’s most underappreciated finishers, Yoane Wissa. The 28-year-old Brentford forward lit up the league last season with 19 goals, outscoring the likes of Heung-Min Son and Darwin Núñez. With Newcastle United’s opening bid of £25 million swiftly rejected (h/t David Ornstein via X), Spurs may now be in prime position to hijack the move.

Wissa’s future at Brentford has become increasingly uncertain after he withdrew from their pre-season camp in Portugal, reportedly ‘unsettled’ by the flurry of interest from Spurs, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest. Given the summer upheaval at Brentford, losing both Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United and Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal, Wissa is arguably the last jewel in their crown.

With former Brentford boss Thomas Frank now in charge at Tottenham, a potential reunion with Wissa could make North London the more enticing destination for the DR Congo international.

Why Wissa Makes Perfect Sense for Tottenham

Wissa wouldn’t just be a nostalgia pick for Frank as he’s a tactical fit for the kind of high-intensity, forward-thinking football Spurs are aiming to play. His versatility to play across the front three, especially as an inverted left winger or second striker, would offer Frank depth and flexibility in attack.

While Newcastle are targeting Wissa as cover for Alexander Isak, Spurs could give him a more prominent role. With Richarlison’s form still inconsistent and the club aiming to compete on multiple fronts, Wissa wouldn’t be joining as a mere rotational option, he could easily stake a claim for regular starts, particularly in the Champions League group stage.

Add to that the financial appealas Spurs are reportedly in a position to offer a better wage package than Newcastle, and it becomes clear that Tottenham could provide the complete package: familiarity, opportunity, European football, and a starring role in a revitalized project.

Time to strike

Tottenham cannot afford to watch another prime opportunity slip by. This isn’t a repeat of chasing rising stars or young projects as Wissa is a proven Premier League goal scorer in his prime. With Newcastle scrambling and facing a growing list of transfer frustrations, Spurs must be ruthless.

The relationship between Wissa and Frank is a ready-made foundation for a successful signing. Combine that with the lure of staying in London and featuring more prominently than he would at St. James’ Park, and Spurs hold all the cards.

Daniel Levy and the recruitment team should act swiftly. If Wissa is available for say around £30 million, a modest fee in today’s market, this is not just a transfer opportunity. It’s a chance to send a statement: Tottenham are done waiting. They’re ready to act like a club that means business.
