Fabrizio Romano has revealed Tottenham are “working on” alternatives for Morgan Gibbs-White

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur have had a very mixed summer transfer window thus far. One of the first moves that Daniel Levy made this season was to replace Europa League-winning manager Ange Postecoglou with Brentford gaffer Thomas Frank. The Dane has come in with his own set of ideas to the N17.

In terms of signings, the club took some time to get going but quickly wrapped up a deal for Mohammed Kudus from West Ham. The Ghanaian attacker has come to Spurs and already hit the ground running in pre-season, impressing one and all with his quality during pre-season friendlies.

One other player for whom Spurs triggered the release clause this summer was Morgan Gibbs-White. However, Nottingham Forest raised an issue that Tottenham had reached out to their star player by illegal means and threatened legal action which all but killed the deal at that point. Eventually, the Englishman ended up putting pen to paper on a new contract.

Tottenham – Nottingham Forest – Morgan Gibbs-White

It was a shame from Spurs’ perspective with the way Forest went about blocking Gibbs-White’s transfer to the North London club. Since the saga, one question that Tottenham fans have been wondering about is whether or not the club will now look at potential alternatives to the 25-year-old midfielder.

In his exclusive Give Me Sport column, reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has addressed the same. He said:

“They’re working on it [alternative targets for Gibbs-White. As soon as I know, I will tell you.”

While the journalist might not have mentioned names as of yet, it is clear that Tottenham are looking at potential alternatives to Gibbs-White. This clearly suggests that it is a position that Thomas Frank wants to address and not necessarily a name that the club was after in the first place.

Who do Tottenham target now?

The issue with predicting things right now is trying to find out what role Frank had in mind for the Nottingham Forest midfielder. Gibbs-White is a very versatile profile who can play in various positions in midfield and attack and perhaps, the upcoming Spurs transfer targets will give a clue about the same.

The manner in which this saga played out from a Tottenham Hotspur perspective this summer has left a bitter taste in the mouth. One way to sweeten things would be to act quickly and decisively to try and sign potential alternatives. It would also help uplift the fans’ moods after a damp few weeks.

It remains to be seen who the names on the shortlist of the club are. The upcoming days should provide more clarity on the situation and let’s wait and see how it plays out.
