Journalist reveals Tottenham might consider selling key player this summer

Ben Jacobs says Tottenham could consider selling James Maddison this summer if they receive a suitable offer

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make a significant sale in this summer transfer window.

The Lilywhites have either released or loaned out players this summer. There are players who are surplus to requirements for new coach Thomas Frank that needs moving on for fresh faces to come into the squad.

Yves Bissouma has been on Fenerbahce’s radar, while Bryan Gil is not a part of Thomas Frank’s plans at the club. Spurs have focused on signing attacking and flair players this summer as evidenced by the acquisitions of Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus. Both are versatile players who can operate in different attacking positions.

After getting Kudus on board, the Hotspur Way chiefs also tried to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest. A No.10 by trade, Gibbs-White’s pursuit was a bit bizarre considering Tottenham are well-stacked in that area of the pitch. However, the Nottingham Forest star’s pursuit now makes a lot of sense as, according to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, Spurs are ready to let one of their star players leave this summer.

Tottenham ready to listen to offers for James Maddison

James Maddison arrived at White Hart Lane from Leicester City in the summer of 2023 amid a lot of fanfare and expectations. Majorly due to injury issues, the creative midfielder has not managed to deliver the goods consistently and live up to the lofty expectations of the Tottenham supporters.

The 28-year-old has missed over 20 games across two seasons in north London following calf, ankle and knee injuries. While that hasn’t affected his productivity (16 goals and 21 assists in 75 appearances), the lack of continuity has now started putting doubts into the minds of the club bosses about whether James Maddison will actually be able to stay injury free.

Now, Ben Jacobs has revealed that there is an outside possibility that Maddison could leave Spurs this summer. The Lilywhites are not forcing him out of Thomas Frank’s project, but they are open to offers and may act if a suitable bid comes in for the midfielder.

“There could be a slight surprise possibility that James Maddison is a player they would listen to offers for, without necessarily forcing him out of the door,” Jacobs said on We Are Tottenham TV.

“What happened last season was that Maddison was in and out, he lacked fitness at times and consistency even when he was fit. I don’t think it’s unthinkable that they would listen to offers at the right price, but it’s not a case of trying to force him out or transfer list him, it’s not their plan that he will leave, but there could be consideration to offers at the right price.”

Spurs must keep Maddison this season

There is no doubt that Spurs had a terrible 2024/25 Premier League season, but Maddison was one of their rare bright sparks. The playmaker was key in the club’s Europa League-winning campaign, delivering big moments in the knockout rounds. He was unfortunate to miss out on the final against Manchester United due to a knee injury, which has also not allowed him to participate in any pre-season games under Frank thus far.

The Coventry-born star produced 12 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions, demonstrating his ability to both create and score goals in equal measure. For a new manager looking to rebuild the squad, there is no way he should get rid of a creative hub like Maddison. All in all, Frank must do his best to keep Maddison and make a key piece in his system.
