Tottenham fails with renewed attempt for PL star; player prefers Liverpool move

Marc Guehi inching towards Liverpool as Tottenham interest falls flat

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a new centre back in the summer transfer window, with the North Londoners targeting a move for Marc Guehi, who has been a target at Hotspur Way around the ongoing summer window, but with the England international’s heart reportedly set on a move to Liverpool despite the North Londoners long-standing interest in his signature.

Guehi sets sights on Anfield

Tottenham Hotspur hold long term interest in Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi

While the Lilywhites have been looking to sign the Cobham academy graduate for over a year, now it looks like the Crystal Palace centre-back has other ideas about his next step, with former Tottenham scout Mick Brown revealing that Guehi’s heart is firmly set on moving to Anfield Stadium, and he would do so even if it means that he has to run down on the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park to secure a free transfer when the next summer comes around.

He went on to reveal that Tottenham went in for him again, but it looks like he is heading to L4.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, he said:

“Tottenham have been looking at Marc Guehi again. They want to sign a centre-back and he’s been on their list since they had that bid rejected in January, because Palace might be willing to let him go.

“I think it’s going to be a difficult one to get done, though, because Liverpool are the favourites. He wants to go to a top-level side where he’s got a chance to win things like the Premier League and Champions League on a consistent basis.

“So I’m told he’s got his heart set on a move to Liverpool, where he could go and do that. They’re definitely interested in him, and I expect they’ll make another offer at some stage.

“If that doesn’t happen, though, I wouldn’t be overly shocked to see him stay at Palace for another season and wait to go to Liverpool on a free transfer. Even if Tottenham do come in for him, I expect he would prefer to wait it out and see what else comes.

“There’s always a bit of uncertainty about Tottenham, for me, and I think he wants to go somewhere he’s going to be stitched on and he knows what he’s going to get. Liverpool are the one he wants, so I think Tottenham will have to look elsewhere.”

Tottenham need defensive depth

Thomas Frank will need some depth in the CB role.

While it does look like Cristian Romero will be staying put at N17 for now, the roles of Kota Takai and Luka Vuskovic remain unclear, with a genuine possibility that both of the latter could leave on loan, which explains why the North Londoners have continued scanning the market for another centre-back.

And given that Marc Guehi gives you not only that Premier League pedigree but also his leadership qualities, he has emerged as a prime target at Hotspur Way. Moreover, the fact that Palace was open to selling him, given the player’s refusal to extend his deal, added to the Lilywhites interest in bringing him to N17. But now it looks like Levy will be forced to find his defensive lynchpin elsewhere.

Author Opinion

At the moment it looks like Guehi’s possible transfer to Tottenham is effectively off the table, and Daniel Levy might now have to accelerate interest in other targets at the moment. Bournemouth centre-back Zabarnyi is also of interest, but it looks like the Ukrainian prefers a move to PSG instead, so Levy might need to pivot once again.
