Tottenham have opened talks with Djed Spence over a new contract
It is clear that Tottenham Hotspur still have a lot of business left to do in the ongoing summer transfer window.
After the additions of Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus, Spurs need to bring in reinforcements in the summer if they want to close the gap on the Premier League rivals next season. Although many players did not perform to their standards the previous campaign, there were a few bright spots. And one of them was Djed Spence.
Having been frozen out of the squad and shipped out on loan on three occasions, Djed Spence’s Tottenham career looked all but over last year. But, to everyone’s surprise, including the player, he was given a chance in the first team by former boss Ange Postecoglou and the full-back did not look back ever since.
The 24-year-old finally enjoyed his breakthrough season in a Spurs shirt, racking up 35 appearances across all competitions. A right-back by trade, Spence also proved his versatility by operating on the other side of the back four. He deputised for the injured Destiny Udogie, playing 24 times at left-back.
Djed Spence in talks with the club over a new improved deal
Back in October 2024, Tottenham agreed a contract extension with the full-back until 2028. Since then, he has progressed well at the club and it didn’t go unnoticed, with former BBC presenter Gary Lineker backing him to make England bow back in March.
Now, according to club insider Paul O Keefe on X, Spence is in talks with Tottenham over a new improved contract.
The former England Under-21 international’s growing influence in Ange’s team last season has not gone unnoticed with the club’s key decision-makers. This is exactly why they are looking to reward his commitment, determination and efforts for being a nobody to becoming an important player at White Hart Lane.

Pedro Porro beware
Spence’s turnaround at Tottenham has been so remarkable that not only he started getting regular minutes last term, but he at one point he had also leapfrogged Pedro Porro as the first-choice right-back under Ange. It took Udogie’s injury to see him slot in at left-back and allow Porro to regain his spot in the first XI, but now with a new boss at the helm, there is no guarantee that the latter will remain the starting right-back.
It is clear that the developments over a possible improved new contract indicates that Spence has a major role to play under Frank. Therefore, Porro has to up his game if he wants to start the season in the Dane’s starting XI.
