South Amerian maestro facing uncertain future at N17 amidst Tottenham contract talks

Rodrigo Bentancur has been in talks with Tottenham over a new contract since May

With most of the focus on the incomings in the ongoing summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have not forgotten the need to move on players from their roster.

There are a few players who are surplus to new boss Thomas Frank’s requirements at N17. Yves Bissouma is one of them, and the club bosses are trying their best to cash him in as he has entered the final year of his contract. Fenerbahce have shown the most interest in Bissouma, who has struggled for consistency throughout his time in north London after moving from Brighton in 2022.

Another player who has not quite lived up to the expectations of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful is Bissouma’s midfield partner, Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguay international has had a topsy-turvy time at Tottenham, with his time in England majorly dominated by off-field issues and injury problems.

Journo reveals Rodrigo Bentancur’s future at Tottenham remains up in the air

Ever since joining from Juventus in January 2022, the central midfielder has barely managed to find any sort of rhythm and consistency in his Spurs career. Persistent injury problems, suspensions and off-field issues have limited his game time on the pitch.

Yet, Tottenham consider Rodrigo Bentancur a key player for the club and had opened contract talks with him in May. Contract talks between the club and player have seemingly stalled in the last two months, but with the midfielder already into the final year of his existing deal, Tottenham must hurry up or risk losing him on a free transfer in 2026.

Now, reputed journalist Ben Jacobs has given an update on Bentancur’s future at the club. On We Are Tottenham TV podcast, Jacobs was asked whether the Uruguayan midfielder could follow Bissouma out of Spurs door as contract talks have not materialised thus far. To which he replied:

“Yeah, another name I think that’s one of those sort of 50/50s at the moment. Tottenham not necessarily progressing on the contract talks that you mentioned and the preseason for him is going as normal. I think he missed, didn’t he? A few days due to illness, but he’s with the squad.

“First indication if a player is leaving and imminently is ultimately they’re removed from the squad or they’re not in the friendlies that you’re playing or they don’t travel when you go away. None of that’s happening with Bentancur at the moment.”

Spurs must move on Bentancur if contract talks do not progress

Tottenham need to get the decisions regarding the squad right in the summer. Daniel Levy and Co. want to keep Bentancur at the club. The player wants to stay too, but so far, contract talks have not progressed.

At 28, the South American has to be at the peak of his powers and dominating midfield battles. That is not the case, and it would not be wrong to say that the Bentancur transfer has not quite worked out for the Lilywhites. As he has entered the final 12 months of his contract, our club’s key decision-makers cannot afford to waste much time. If a new contract is not agreed, we must not hesitate to cash Bentancur in and sign an upgrade on him this summer.
