End of an era at N17 as Tottenham superstar bids goodbye

Iconic Son Heung-min has announced his intention to leave Tottenham Hotspur after 10 years for a new challenge amid Los Angeles FC interest

Tottenham Hotspur’s attack is set for a shake-up, and the heart of it all is the recent revelation of Son Heung-min.

Spurs fans may have been stunned by the news that Son Heung-min has asked to leave this summer amid intense links with MLS club Los Angeles FC. His imminent departure from White Hart Lane marks the end of an era. The 33-year-old has been one of the North London club’s and the Premier League’s most consistent players over the past decade, and Spurs’ talisman and skipper since Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich in 2023.

The South Korean forward joined the Lilywhites from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015, and he has scored 173 goals and supplied 101 assists in 454 competitive games across 10 seasons. After years of struggles, hard work, sweat and pain, Son Heung-min finally got his icy hands on a trophy as a Tottenham player. The versatile forward’s status as a club legend was secured in May after he helped Tottenham win the Europa League and end their 17-year-long trophy drought, but his recent admission has left a bittersweet feeling for the fans.

Son Heung-min confirms wanting a new adventure after 10 years at Tottenham

Spurs are currently on a pre-season tour of Asia and face Newcastle United in a friendly fixture in Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday. It is Son’s home country, and there will surely be some highly emotional scenes at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in what could now be his final game in a Tottenham shirt.

At a press conference on Saturday, the Lilywhites skipper confirmed that he wants to end his 10-year spell at the club as he seeks a new challenge elsewhere.

“It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision, Son said at the start of the press conference.

“I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.

“I want to say thank you to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept that and respect that.”

Thomas Frank, who was appointed as Ange Postecoglou’s successor at Tottenham earlier this summer, paid tribute to the South Korean icon.

“For me, personally, I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player. He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League. It is never easy to find the perfect timing and me coming in from the side, it makes it a bit easier to end on a high.”

Son will want to end his Spurs career on a high

Son had a poor 2024/25 season overall by the high standards he’s set and struggled with injury, yet the forward supplied 11 goals and 12 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. He has fulfilled his dream of playing at the highest level in Europe, competing in the Premier League, and most importantly winning a trophy with the North London club.

Los Angeles FC have shown a concrete interest in signing Son in the last couple of weeks, and after years of competing like a warrior in the Premier League and Europe, our legendary No.7 deserves to enjoy a merrier life in the MLS. He will want to end his Spurs career on a high by helping Frank’s team beat Newcastle United in front of his home fans on Sunday.
