New recruit Joao Palhinha backed to make an instant impact for Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur side

Joao Palhinha has become Tottenham Hotspur’s latest recruit of the summer transfer window.

The defensive midfielder has returned to the Premier League after a difficult 2024/25 campaign with Bayern Munich, joining Spurs on a season-long loan. The north Londoners also have a €30m purchase option in place for the 30-year old.

Having failed to cement his spot in the Bayern first XI under Vincent Kompany and managing just six starts in the Bundesliga, the Portugal international is back in the Premier League. During his two-year spell across the capital at Fulham, Joao Palhinha established himself as one of the English top-flight’s best defensive midfielders. Having got a decent amount of Premier League experience, he will be expected to hit the ground running at Tottenham.

Given that it became quite clear that Spurs required a classic No.6 owing to the inconsistencies that we have seen from the current options along the past season, Palhinha will not only bolster the midfield unit but also provide extra protection to the backline. The Lilywhites’ defence was sixes and sevens throughout the 2024/25 campaign, as an injury crisis never allowed the team to get any sort of momentum or consistency. This resulted in them leaking goals for fun and finishing 17th in the league table.

Joao Palhinha set to have a huge impact at Tottenham

Tottenham’s first-choice centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven were victims of injury problems. Not only the duo, the entire defensive unit got persistently exposed due to a lack of security blanket in front of them, with none of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr doing enough in midfield.

This is where Palhinha’s signing is seen so vital for a Tottenham team under Thomas Frank. Reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham feels the Portuguese enforcer will ease a lot of worries for the team’s defence in the upcoming campaign. Here is what he said to Tottenham Hotspur News:

“Palhinha is exactly what the doctor ordered,”

“You’ve now got someone at six feet two sitting in front of your two centre-backs.”

The Portuguese enforcer would provide experience and steel to Tottenham’s midfield

In recent years, the north London club’s midfield has distinctly lacked a formidable and physical ball-winner like Palhinha, making it fairly easy for the opposition to cut through them like a hot knife through butter.

So, the hope with the Bayern misfit’s acquisition will be to immediately solidify Tottenham’s engine room, adding defensive discipline, physicality and steel. The Lisbon native could provide the base for creative players like Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus and James Maddison to carry on their good work in the final and cause the teams problems.

All in all, Palhinha would be raring to rebuild his stock at N17 after a failed move to Bayern.
