Ange Postecoglou reveals ‘symbolic’ reason that inspired Tottenham stars to Europa League glory

Tottenham legend Heung-Min Son is finishing his Spurs career on a high after leading the club to UEL glory last season

Tottenham star Heung-Min Son has etched his name in the club’s history books in bold letters. The South Korea international stayed at N17 through thick and thin during his ten-year spell at the club. And it is fair to say that his loyalty finally paid off as the Lilywhites managed to end their trophy-drought last season by winning the Europa League against all odds.

The historic achievement proved to be the perfect fairytale ending for the legendary winger’s spell in North London. It was Son’s first silverware while donning the Lilywhite jersey. And the Europa League success was worth all the near misses and heartaches that the 32-year-old suffered in recent years while playing for the North London club.

Tottenham legend Heung-Min Son is ready to leave the club for a new chapter.

Now, Son’s chapter at N17 has finally come to an end after a successful spell in the Premier League. The South Korean is on the verge of completing a move to MLS club LAFC. And it looks like the 32-year-old will not get a chance to play in front of the Spurs fans one last time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Not a single fan can say that the winger did not give his all for the club… and he will go down as a modern-day legend at the club.

Ange Postecoglou shares how Tottenham players won UEL for Heung-Min Son

There was a lot at stake for Tottenham when they took on Manchester United in the Europa League final in May. Ange Postecoglou’s job was on the line as he prepared for the biggest game of his managerial career. Not only that, but Heung-Min Son also had the chance to win his first trophy with the club after years of near misses. It is well known that Big Ange managed to end the trophy drought, but he could survive the sack.

However, the Australian tactician has shared what drove the players to win the Europa League and end the 17-year wait for a major trophy. Speaking to The Athletic, Big Ange said,

“I made him a big focus of our Europa run, because I thought he was symbolic of where people saw the club. Obviously, he’s an outstanding player, but was missing that key piece of success.”

The ex-Spurs manager added,

“[I told them] If we can elevate Sonny to a level above some of the best players that have ever played for this club by winning something and having him lift a trophy, we’re all going to be part of something special. We’re going to be part of his legacy.”

Ange Postecoglou shares that he made sure Heung-Min Son was the main focus of Tottenham’s Europa League run. The ex-Spurs manager added that Son gave his all for the club but was missing silverware that he had worked so hard for. Big Ange also shared that the players wanted to win the Europa League for the South Korean as they wanted Son to etch his name in the club’s history books as a modern-day legend.

Heung-Min Son can be proud of the effort he put in while donning the Lilywhite jersey. The legendary winger’s consistency shows that he was always giving his all for the North London club. And his loyalty proves that he will be remembered fondly at N17 for years to come. The fans will hope that they get to say a last goodbye to the Spurs No.7 before he departs for the MLS in the few days’ time.
