Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it has been widely known for the past few days that Son Heung-min is on his way to join MLS side Los Angeles FC, pulling the curtains down on a glorious career with Tottenham Hotspur.
Arguably the biggest legend to have played for the club over the past decade, dare we say, even more than Harry Kane who left before Spurs could win a trophy, Sonny will be missed at the N17.
It will be different to see the squad list and not see Son Heung-min’s name with the #7 next to it next season but it is the harsh reality of football that we need to get used to. Time waits for no man.
LAFC will pay an MLS record fee to sign Son Heung-min
Now, as per journalist Ben Jacobs, Los Angeles FC will be paying Tottenham an MLS record $27m to sign Son Heung-min permanently this summer. This would eclipse the previous $22m Atlanta United paid for Emmanuel Latte Lath.
Son is now en route LA where he will link up with his new club and undergo his medicals. Should everything be finalized in terms of documentation, the South Korean won’t be a Spurs player for much longer.
It is completely understandable that the 33-year-old wanted to leave Tottenham this summer. He has given everything to this club in the past 10 years and it culminated in a moment of glory for him last season.
One of captain Son’s last acts as a Spurs player in an official game would be that he got to lift the Europa League trophy after beating Manchester United in the final last season.
A legend of the N17
He will forever go down in Spurs’ history books for being the skipper to have broken the silverware drought and brought a trophy back to the N17. He will always fondly be remembered by the fans.
Now, as Son embarks on the next step of what has been a beautiful footballing career, there is nothing but love between the two parties. Spurs would love nothing more than to see the South Korean thrive in the MLS and enjoy his final years as a professional footballer.
It remains to be seen how long it will take before the official communication arrives. It will be an emotional moment, without a doubt but let’s hope Spurs can build on the foundations the captain has left behind and take it to the next level.
