We have seen Djed Spence come a long way at Tottenham Hotspur, and it looks like this journey that he has had since signing at Hotspur Way from Middlesbrough might finally be leading somewhere meaningful.
The North Londoners are expected to hand the versatile full-back a new long-term contract at N17 which will see him tied down at the club until 2030. And if you would have asked someone about this last summer, it would have been a massive headline debate, but this one now feels entirely justified given the shift he put in for the Lilywhites last season.
Spence was widely important to the Lilywhites in the last season, where his contribution was quite significant given how the 24-year-old stepped up after Destiny Udogie’s consistent injury problems continued to sideline him. And while Djed was often played out of position, he never looked out of place.
And now with Thomas Frank taking charge of proceedings at Hotspur Way, Spence has that capacity to be a utility player in the current roster (someone who can fit on either flank, and irrespective of where he plays, he delivers with consistency). And this flexibility will become really important in the upcoming season given that the North Londoners will be juggling between domestic and European demands.
And we are seeing that in displays as well. Given that he was facing Bukayo Saka in the North Londoners’ recent 1-0 pre-season win over Arsenal in Hong Kong, he was one of the better players on the pitch.
There is talk of a new deal on the table
According to transfer insider Paul O’Keefe, the Lilywhites are said to be in advanced talks with the former Middlesbrough defender’s representatives as they look to hand him a new and improved deal at N17. While he only extended his contract at Tottenham last season, which tied him to the club till 2028, the new discussions are to hand him a further extension which will see him tied to Tottenham till 2030.
And speaking in a recent interview with Tottenham News Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham insisted that Spence is one of the players who has been consistently putting in ‘high-level’ performances, and he feels that this new contract will end up recognising his newly found authority in the roster at Hotspur Way.
He said:
“I thought Spence was fantastic against Arsenal, playing out of position again,” Wenham said.
“He seems to be able to play on either side to a consistently high level. I think he’s one of those where they recognise his importance for the squad, his ability to play on the right or the left-hand side, and always perform well.
“The previous extension was just to give him a little bit more money; it was only for the one extra year that he signed for. Instead of 2027, his deal was extended to 2028, and obviously, he’s now in talks to extend again, but probably looking at around 2030, that sort of length of contract.”
It is a smart decision to hand Spence a new contract
And Spence would be fitting into the current roster at Hotspur Way given that Thomas Frank will now take charge of the proceedings at N17. We have seen how the Dane head coach has put in a lot of emphasis on the structure and given the tactical clarity that he demands, and therein, having someone like Spence, he’d have someone that has the framework to flourish under these structural restrictions.
Given his versatility, Spence can seamlessly operate on either flank, which makes him an ideal cog in a setup that demands adaptability, especially with the added burden of European fixtures.
Now handing him a new contract shows that he has grown into one of the North Londoners’ most dependable presences in the squad, who is ready to answer every call with maturity and consistency. And giving him a new contract is smart squad planning, given that the Lilywhites keep that versatile depth and a player on the rise.

Since calling Tottenham his home since that highly anticipated transfer from Middlesbrough in 2022, we have seen how Spence was bounced around on loans from Rennes to Leeds and Genoa, none of which ever truly allowed him to settle at Hotspur Way, and while the talent was always obvious, there were a lot of question marks about his discipline and consistency. But now he looks into his own. And the most promising thing about this is that his ceiling is still very high.
Given how both Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro have been consistently dealing with fitness issues, Spence can end up forcing his way into being a first-choice option at N17 if he keeps up this development and consistency.
