Lucas Bergvall ready to fill James Maddison sized boots at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur received a massive injury blow as James Maddison has been sidelined for most of the upcoming campaign alongside Dejan Kulusevski, who is also on the treatment table for the commencement of the new season, and this is where the Lilywhites supporters need someone to step up with confidence. That’s exactly what Lucas Bergvall has done, as the Swedish starlet insists that he is ready to take on creative responsibilities if Thomas Frank hands him the keys to the #10 role at Hotspur Way.
Maddison saw his ACL rupture in the pre-season game against Newcastle United, which now leaves the Lilywhites without their chief creator. And Frank has trialled Pape Matar Sarr as the advanced midfielder in a recent friendly against Bayern Munich, but Bergvall is quietly putting his hand up for the job.
Lucas Bergvall ready to step up in Maddison’s absense

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football.London, the 19-year-old insisted that he is comfortable playing anywhere across the midfield but went on to admit that when playing in a #10 role, it requires a special kind of impact.
“I’m just going to play in whatever position Thomas wants me to play, doesn’t matter if it’s six, eight or a ten. I’ll play there and do my best. Of course, there’s a difference [between the roles]. You’re further up the pitch.
“When you’re a six, you have to come out to get the ball more, be more in the build-up. When you’re a ten, you need to have some magic and come into the box and score goals and assist.”
And when he was quizzed on whether he has that magic to play ten, he continued:
“I don’t know, we’ll see!. I feel like I can do a good job there. Maybe I’m not a typical ten, but with Madders and Kulu injured, maybe I need to step up. Pape played there today, so we’ll see. I’ll just play wherever he wants me.”
Tottenham are also in the market for a new #10

With Maddison and Kulusevski out for now with injuries, Thomas Frank will have early-early-season selection headaches, and given that the North Londoners are still pushing in the market to bring in a creative midfielder, Bergvall would not be a bad idea as well. While the Swedish midfielder may not be your “typical” number 10, given the energy and composure that he has shown in the last season, he could well be ready to take on the role. And then you see his willingness to step into the role; it could make him an interesting short-term solution.
But as mentioned, Daniel Levy has been working hard to get another face through the doors at Hotspur Way for that creative role, with Harvey Elliott, Nico Paz and Eberechi Eze among the targets. It is to be seen where this one goes, but for now Tottenham fans could sleep peacefully knowing that Bergvall is ready to step up if needed.
