Tottenham are set to open formal talks with Crystal Palace for the signing of Eberechi Eze

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank watched on as his side capitulated against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine on Wednesday.

From 2-0 down, Paris Saint-Germain fought back to 2-2 in the dying minutes, courtesy of goals from substitutes Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos, with the Les Parisians clinching the trophy on penalty shootout soon afterwards.

There were many positives to take for Thomas Frank, who was “proud” of his team in the aftermath for what was a strong-willed and disciplined performance against Europe’s best team. The spirited performance was made all the more impressive considering the weakened Tottenham squad are still trying to find a way to manage without club legend Son Heung-min, who joined Los Angeles FC last week, alongside injured creative midfield duo James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Maddison will spend around six to seven months of the sidelines following an ACL rupture, and to immediately replace him in the squad, the Lilywhites have set their sights on Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

Tottenham are set to open formal talks with Crystal Palace for Eberechi Eze

Ex-scout expects Tottenham to make Eberechi Eze highest paid player

After reports of Tottenham finding themselves ahead of bitter rivals Arsenal in the race for Eberechi Eze emerged earlier this week, reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed on Thursday that Spurs are set to open formal talks with Crystal Palace for the playmaker.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not keen on activating Eze’s £68m release clause, which expires on Friday (August 15), but added that the Eagles may still hold out for the full value. It is understood that the 27-year-old would be open to moving to White Hart Lane if the two clubs can agree on a fee.

Now, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King feels that the England international could command over £200,000 weekly wages if the move does materialise.

“Eze has moved from QPR to Palace and established himself as an international footballer and certainly one of the best in the Premier League,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“One of the main reasons why he’d come to Spurs would be the wages. It’s going to be in excess of £200,000-a-week here, which would be a big rise from where he is at the moment.

“Palace have won the FA Cup and they’ve won the Community Shield, maybe he (Eze) will feel that he’s fulfilled his time there and it could be time to move on.

“Tottenham would be mad not to put an offer in, they’ve got to get it done. He’d be the perfect replacement for Maddison, and I think he’s a better player than Maddison.”

Tottenham may not have planned to sign a Son Heung-min replacement this summer but James Maddison’s ACL injury has changed that

Eze would be a class acquisition for Tottenham

Eze is a proven commodity, someone who is ready to come in, replace Maddison and make an immediate impact at Tottenham. He has been one of the best creative talents in the top flight in recent years, whilst being a silky dribbler and ball progressor. The England international is also a fine set-piece taker and composed finisher in front of goal.

Son was Tottenham’s highest paid player since Harry Kane departed two summers ago, with the South Korean international bagging £190,000 gross per week. With him gone now, Levy has the money to make Eze the highest earner if he moves to the club, but we doubt it will be above or in the region of £200,000 per week.

The Tottenham chairman has always maintained a strict wage policy and will continue to do so, meaning Eze would significantly earn a lot here at N17 but not anywhere in the region of wages King predicts. As the playmaker is ready to join Frank’s forces, agreeing personal terms seemingly does not look like a problem with him.
