Tottenham will hope that Rodrigo Bentancur will sign a new deal at N17 and extend his stay at the club
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has endured a ‘stop-start’ stint at N17 ever since he made the switch to North London. The Uruguay international has wealth of experience under his belt, but the injury issues that he has endured have not helped his cause at all. However, it is important to note that the Lilywhites are a much better team when the 28-year-old is on the pitch playing for the club.
The ex-Juventus star was in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons last season after he was given a seven-match suspension by the FA for making a remark on Heung-Min Son. To make matters worse, Bentancur was also on the verge of leaving the club earlier in the summer before the Lilywhites had decided who the next manager was going to be.

But ever since Thomas Frank has been appointed as the Spurs manager, Rodrigo Bentancur’s stock at N17 has risen through the roof. The Danish tactician is clearly a fan of the 28-year-old, and has said time and again that he considers Bentancur a crucial part of the dressing room. The midfielder also featured prominently against PSG on Wednesday for Thomas Frank’s first official game in charge.
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur might extend his stay at N17
It has not gone unnoticed that Rodrigo Bentancur only has a year remaining in his current contract at N17. The Uruguay international was linked with a summer move earlier last month, as Tottenham looked to cash-in on him before losing him for free next year. But Thomas Frank’s arrival has changed the 28-year-old’s fortunes at the club, as he looks to revive his career in North London.
Now, transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey believes Thomas Frank has made it clear that he wants the Uruguay international to stay at the club. Speaking to TBR Football, Bailey said,
“Bentancur is someone who we have covered previously, but he’s a player who has done really well. Obviously, a lot of people are thinking, ‘Oh, is there room for him in Frank’s side?’ There clearly is.”
The journalist added,
“The thing with Bentancur is his new contract. I do understand that Thomas Frank wants him to progress with that – he’s only got a year left, I think. My understanding is that Thomas Frank wants him to sign a new deal. He’s very happy with him.”
Graeme Bailey believes Rodrigo Bentancur has a massive part to play under Thomas Frank and there is clearly enough room in the team for the 28-year-old. The transfer correspondent then adds that Thomas Frank wants Bentancur to extend his contract at N17, as the midfielder only has a year left in his current Spurs deal. Bailey also reports that the new Tottenham manager is ‘happy’ with the Uruguay international, and considers him a crucial part of the squad.
Fans will hope that the 28-year-old will put pen to paper in the coming weeks and end all the speculation regarding his future. He is a senior figure in the dressing room, so his presence amongst the youngsters will be a key factor in Spurs’ decision to offer him a new deal.
