Tottenham will look to kickstart a new era at N17 by trying to win their PL opener against Burnley on Saturday
It is fair to say that the Tottenham players were still finding their feet in pre-season games under Thomas Frank. The squad was getting used to the Danish tactician’s system and there were considerable flaws in the way they managed a few situations during the games. But that is what the pre-season games are for. They help you understand where the players are lacking and how it can be improved.
Many also believed that the UEFA Super Cup final came too soon for Spurs as they did not stand a chance against PSG on paper. However, credit where it due as the Lilywhites outplayed the reigning Champions League winners for most parts of the game. The North London club managed to lead the game 2-0 until the 85th minute, thanks to goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
But thing started going wrong during the last few minutes of the game, and PSG managed to claw their way back and make it 2-2. To make matters worse, Spurs then went to lose the game on penalties after working so hard to cause an upset. Thomas Frank’s men were within touching distance of winning a second major trophy in three months.
Tottenham players should move on from the PSG heartache before their PL opener
Coming within touching distance of beating one of the best teams in Europe and winning a major trophy again is something that Tottenham almost managed to achieve. But it is was not meant to be for Thomas Frank’s men as they squandered around in the last ten minutes of the game and threw away a precious lead. However, Thomas Frank was still ‘proud’ of his team’s efforts against the French giants and how they played the game.
Yet, Paul Robinson believes that the loss against PSG might cause some ‘lasting damage’ if the Lilywhites do not get their act together. Speaking to Tottenham News, Robinson said,
“I was there, I was inside the stadium, I could see the devastation on the players’ faces. They knew how close they were to beating PSG. After 85 minutes, they were 2-0 up. And by the way, let’s not forget, they were also 2-0 up in the penalty shootout.”
The ex-Spurs player added,
“They threw a 2-0 lead away twice, and they were devastated after that game. PSG weren’t at their utmost best, as we know, they only had a week’s pre-season. You just wonder what lasting damage it was there for Tottenham.”
Paul Robinson pointed out that the Tottenham players were distraught after coming within touching distance of beating PSG and winning a trophy. The ex-Spurs player also shared that the Lilywhites were 2-0 up during the game, as well as, during the penalty shootout. And still managed to find a way to bottle the game despite working so hard. Robinson also believes that PSG did not look sharp as they only had six days to prepare for the game, indicating that Spurs will have a ‘lasting damage’ after the defeat.
