Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a late summer bid for Real Sociedad star Takefusa Kubo

Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer window could be about to take another twist, with reports in Spain suggesting that Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo has emerged as a target for Thomas Frank’s squad.

The 24-year-old Japanese international, nicknamed the “Japanese Messi” is regarded as one of La Liga’s most exciting talents and would represent a bold move as Spurs continue their search for attacking reinforcements.

Eze talks ongoing, Kubo emerges as an alternative

Spurs have already advanced talks with Eberechi Eze, even agreeing personal terms with the Crystal Palace star, but his involvement in Palace’s opening fixture against Chelsea highlights just how complicated negotiations could be. With the window closing in two weeks, Daniel Levy and the recruitment team are wisely keeping alternatives on the table.

According to Fichajes, that’s where Kubo comes in. Real Sociedad are open to a sale if their £60m (€70m) valuation is met, and Spurs are reportedly seriously considering paying up. It’s not just about having another name on the shortlist , Frank has approved Kubo’s signing and believes he could become a decisive figure in the Premier League.

Why Kubo fits Spurs’ project

Kubo has built a strong reputation in Spain since joining Sociedad in 2022. His pace, direct dribbling, and ability to cut inside from the right have caused countless problems for defenders. Last season, he chipped in with seven goals and four assists in 52 appearances, while his work rate and technical craft earned admiration across Europe.

For Frank, who has already reshaped Spurs’ identity in pre-season and led them to the Europa League triumph last year, Kubo could be the kind of winger who thrives in a system based on pressing, fluidity, and sharp transitions. With James Maddison sidelined for the majority of the season with an ACL injury, Tottenham desperately need creativity and attacking thrust. Kubo, capable of playing wide or centrally, ticks many of those boxes.

Eberechi Eze is still in Tottenham’s sights.

Barcelona legend Xavi once described Kubo as “world-class”, and while that comparison to Messi may be lofty, his flair and unpredictability make him an attractive option for a team that needs to unlock tight defences in both domestic and European football.

Spurs have already splashed out £55m on Mohammed Kudus, and that move is already looking like a bargain given his early impact. Now, with talks also ongoing for Manchester City’s Savinho, the idea of adding Kubo into the mix only underlines Daniel Levy’s determination to back Frank and keep Spurs competitive on all fronts.

Kubo’s four years left on his Sociedad deal give the Spanish side a strong hand in negotiations, but Tottenham’s growing financial clout – plus their Champions League status – could be enough to tempt both player and club.

Whether Spurs push through for Eze, Savinho, or now Kubo, one thing is clear: Tottenham will not enter September without a marquee attacking signing. Kubo may be the surprise option, but he looks tailor-made for Frank’s vision, and in north London, surprises often turn into season-defining decisions.
