“There have been talks”- Tottenham trying to tie down star man to a new contract; Thomas Frank keen to retain him

Tottenham Hotspur keen to retain the services of star defender Cristian Romero

The fans would love nothing more than seeing Cristian Romero don the Lilywhite jersey for years to come. The Argentina international has quickly made a name for himself at N17, and has surely become of the club’s greatest ever defenders in recent years. The 27-year-old’s impact in the dressing room is clear for all to see as he commands respect and hundred percent effort from his teammates.

It is fair to say that the ex-Atalanta star endured a ‘stop-start’ campaign last season under Ange Postecoglou. But the prolific centre-back stepped up when it mattered the most during the latter stages of the Europa League, ensuring that the Lilywhites ended their trophy-drought after 17 years. He was one of the standout players on the pitch in that game as he carved his name into the history books.

Tottenham Hotspur keen to retain the services of star defender Cristian Romero.
Tottenham are hoping to tie Cristian Romero down to a new contract in the coming weeks.

However, this summer has not been straightforward for the Argentine defender. Romero was constantly linked with a move to Atletico Madrid as Diego Simeone looked to upgrade his defence. There were reports that Simeone called the Spurs star every day as well in an attempt to lure him to Spain. But Atleti failed to meet the asking price for the centre-back and he ended up staying at N17 instead.

Tottenham will look to hand Cristian Romero a contract extension at N17

Tying Cristian Romero down to a new contract at Tottenham is as good as making a new signing. The Argentina international was recently named as club captain for the ongoing season, ensuring that Thomas Frank thinks highly of him. And now, Spurs will look to take this opportunity and offer the 27-year-old a new contract so that he can spend his best years in North London.

The Spurs No.17 just has two years left in his current contract, so the Lilywhites are hoping to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future to say the least. As per TBR Football correspondent Graeme Bailey,

“There have been talks with Thomas Frank, and he’s very, very happy with what he’s come across. Will this help persuade him to sign a new contract? It won’t hurt. That’s what the Club really want. They want him to sign this new deal.”

The journalist added,

“It will see him become the highest-paid player at the club, if things start well this season, I don’t think that’ll be a million miles away.”

Graeme Bailey has suggested that Thomas Frank is extremely happy with Cristian Romero and wants the Argentina international to spend his best years in a Lilywhite jersey. The journalist added that Romero would become the highest-paid player at N17 if and when he accepts the new contract proposal that Spurs might put out. Bailey then goes on to add that Romero would wait and see how the season progresses before committing himself to Spurs.

Fans will hope that the ex-Atalanta star manages to stay at Spurs for a long time to come. With Romero at the back, Tottenham look more assured and perform better. There is no doubt about that, and most people will agree with that. Thomas frank also relies on the 27-year-old’s leadership skills as he leads from the front and the players respect him.
