Cristian Romero believes Tottenham is the right place for him to develop as a player
Tottenham fans have never been more optimistic about a new season as they are right now. A solid win in the first Premier League game of the season, new signings making an impact, and the Lilywhites retaining key players for the new campaign amid all the uncertainty surrounding them. The fans could not have asked for a better start to Thomas Frank’s time at N17.
One of the major worries heading into the summer after last season ended was the future of Cristian Romero. The Argentina international was the talk of the town as he looked all set to move to pastures new. There were reports linking him to make a move to Atletico Madrid earlier in the transfer window. The report also stated that Diego Simeone was ‘desperate’ to land the 27-year-old and called him every day to lure him to Spain.

But Atleti could not match Tottenham’s asking price for the defender and Romero stayed put (not that he had any problem with it). To make things even sweeter, the prolific centre-back was named as the club captain last week for the new season following Heung-Min Son’s departure. This all but confirmed that the 27-year-old was set to stay at N17 till next summer.
Tottenham have managed to tie down Cristian Romero to a new contract
Tottenham have just managed to tie down Cristian Romero to a new contract amid all the uncertainty regarding his future. The Argentina international has become one of the most important players in the club’s recent history. And there is no surprise that Thomas Frank wanted to retain the 27-year-old for the foreseeable future as he is a clear leader in the dressing room.
Now we finally know how Spurs managed to do the unthinkable and convince Romero to stay. Speaking to TBR Football, Graeme Bailey has revealed,
“I am told that during his interview for manager, Thomas Frank made it clear that he saw Romero as a key player. Indeed, he did not believe anyone within the squad was more important than him.”
The journalist added,
“Whilst he is getting huge money, Romero insisted throughout that he would only sign if Tottenham were making the right noises about their future and they have clearly done that.”
Graeme Bailey believes Thomas Frank made it clear straightaway that he saw Cristian Romero as an important part of his setup. The journalist also insisted that signing a new deal at N17 will make Romero one of the best paid players in the squad… and deservedly so. Bailey then pointed out the Argentine would have only considered extending his contract if Spurs showed intent in the summer, which the club have clearly done.

Now that the 27-year-old is all set to stay at Tottenham at least until 2029, the Lilywhites should go all-out and challenge for more trophies. They have a solid team that can easily fight for major trophies, provided that the club manages to address one or two more areas on the pitch. Not only that, but Spurs now have their defensive line in a lock-up and it is fair to say that they are quickly becoming an exciting team to watch.
