Tottenham Hotspur urged to retain the services of Luka Vuskovic this summer
Tottenham Hotspur have assembled a great team for the 2025-26 season and it is now up to Thomas Frank and his players to showcase their credentials on the pitch for this season.
Among other areas of the team, the defense is also quite strong. This strength was put on display clearly in the first game of the new Premier League season, as Spurs beat Burnley with a 3-0 scoreline.
Cristian Romero and Mikey van de Ven were the team’s starting center-backs in this match, and they are expected to remain the preferred pairing for Frank in the middle of the backline. This is particularly the case after Romero signed a new contract with Tottenham, thus ending the possibility of any move away from the North London club.
Martin Allen against sending Luka Vuskovic on loan
While beneficial for the team overall, this is not the best scenario for the 18-year-old defender Luka Vuskovic, who returned to Tottenham this summer after spending the last season on loan with the Belgian side Westerlo.
The youngster impressed during this loan stint, and also after returning to Spurs this summer, but still, he was not used in the opening game of the season against Burnley. This theme is expected to repeat as the season progresses, and thus, some commentators have recommended sending Vuskovic on loan to ensure his continued development.
However, talking to Tottenham News, the former Brentford and Leicester City boss Martin Allen believed that remaining as a depth piece at the North London side would be the better course of action for the young defender than leaving on loan.
Talking about the Croat, the former midfielder said:
“A loan could be positive, but I don’t think I’d be letting him go.
“With the amount of games that are to be played, domestically and in Europe, I think they’ll be keen to keep all their players and keep them onside.
“Vuskovic will get appearances off the bench and in cup games to develop him and get him used to the level.
“I think that will be far better for his preparation and will allow him to grow in the group, stay at the training ground and get a taste for it“
There is definitely some wisdom in Allen’s words. With Romero and de Ven established as starters, Vuskovic might not get a lot of opportunities to play in the biggest games for Spurs. However, with a long and hectic season ahead, he will still get plenty of opportunities to play.
Furthermore, remaining under the order of Thomas Frank would allow him to incorporate his ideas and style better, which could provide him with an edge if one of these two starting centre-backs stop preforming at their expected levels. For now, it remains to be seen what decision the North London side will take with the young defender.
