Tottenham Hotspur target Piero Hincapie is keen to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer

Overall, Tottenham Hotspur have had quite a busy summer transfer window in which they saw some very important departures, including that of Son Heung-Min, and some exciting new arrivals, like those of Joao Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus.

However, Spurs have been particularly active in this last phase of the market, as they are still trying to bring in a new forward to mitigate the impact of James Maddison’s long-term injury that he suffered during the preseason.

Meanwhile, the North London side is also looking to strengthen some other areas of the team, and one such area is the central defense, where Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are the preferred starters for Thomas Frank for now.

Despite this duo putting in some good performances in the first few games of the season, Tottenham have still been linked with another defender for some time now, i.e., the Ecuadorian center-back Piero Hincapie.

The latest update on the defender has been provided by journalist Fabrizio Romano via X, who reveals that the defender wants to leave his current team, Bayer Leverkusen, in these last few days of the transfer window. Spurs had already made an inquiry about him about 10 days ago, but now more Premier League clubs are interested in him.

Tottenham have more urgent affairs to settle

Furthermore, he would be within the reach of most of these clubs, as he has a relatively affordable release clause of €60 million. Still, this is quite a significant sum, and only the clubs that really need to strengthen their backline would consider paying it.

This is not really the case with the Lilywhites for now, as they already have a set defense and also recently completed the renewal of Romero, thus ensuring his long-term future at the club. Thus, Tottenham would be better off focusing their attentions and resources on another forward before the transfer window closes.

But in different circumstances, there is no doubt that Piero Hincapie would be quite a good addition to the Spurs squad. He would bring in a lot of composure and passing ability into the backline, allowing the team to start dangerous attacks right from their first line.
