Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a left-winger after completing the signing of Xavi Simons
Tottenham Hotspur have begun the new Premier League campaign in an impressive fashion, but they remain in the transfer market for reinforcements.
Thomas Frank’s long pursuit of a No.10 ended on Friday when the north Londoners announced the capture of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. James Maddison’s torn ACL had made the signing of a creative midfielder a priority for the club, and after the heartbreaks of Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, they have been able to bring in Simons.
Simons has become Tottenham’s fifth-most expensive signing of their history. The Netherlands international had seemed destined for a move to Chelsea, but a call from Spurs saw his decision change quickly. With the versatile attacker joining from RB Leipzig, the Europa League champions have now taken their tally of summer signings to seven.
Tottenham want a left-winger before Monday’s transfer deadline
It will be interesting to see how Simons fits in at Tottenham under Thomas Frank. One may feel that the Dutchman’s late addition would bring curtains to the Lilywhites’ summer transfer window, but that is not the case.
Before the arrival of Simons, Frank managed to bring in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United. Daniel Levy also decided to turn Mathys Tel’s loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal. However, Son Heung-min’s departure of MLS side Los Angeles FC, coupled with Maddison joining Dejan Kulusevski on the sidelines, has changed the club’s transfer plans.
Now, according to a report from Sky Sports, the north Londoners are interested in a left-winger after bringing in Simons. They will try to get a wide player before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Time running out
Tottenham have been keen on signing Savinho, but Manchester City are not ready to part ways with the player so late in the window. The Sky Blues have rejected Spurs’ bids for the Brazilian as they want to keep him at all cost this season.
Following a failed pursuit of the Brazilian, it is up to the Hotspur Way chiefs whom they target to fortify their wide department. Tel, Kudus, Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson are the current wide options at Frank’s disposal. Eyeing a new winger means the Dane is not quite happy with the options and depth in the position, given the Lilywhites are competing in the Champions League this term.
That said, Levy and Co. must quickly identify an alternative to Savinho and try wrapping up a deal before next week’s transfer deadline.
