Tim Sherwood remains unconvinced by new Tottenham Hotspur star Xavi Simons
Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig on Friday. Thomas Frank had prioritized the signing of the 22-year-old after his failed pursuits of Eberechi Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White. His wish was granted just before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Xavi Simons had agreed personal terms with Chelsea, but when Spurs called, he made a U-turn and decided to join them. The Netherlands international penned a five-year deal at White Hart Lane, with an option to extend it by two more years, and the club have handed him the iconic No.7 jersey. His signing ends the north London club’s pursuit of a new No. 10, a position where their options have been limited since the start of the season.
The Dutchman is Spurs’ seventh signing of the summer transfer window, and he will be raring to make an immediate impact in the Premier League. Simons is now the fifth-most expensive signing in the Lilywhites’ history, and one pundit has given his verdict on the player.

Tim Sherwood expresses doubts about Tottenham’s latest signing
Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood has given his opinion on Simons, and he has one issue. The English pundit feels the latest Tottenham recruit is an exciting player, but he has concerns about his consistency.
“They’ve got a lot of players in their squad (who are) very similar. Mathys Tel, why did they bring him in? I mean, he’s blocking up pathways. They’re all as good as each other,” Tim Sherwood said on Sky Sports.
“What I’m saying is I wanted them to sign a player who’s going to go straight into the first-team and be a mainstay in the side. I’m not sure Xavi Simons is that man. He excites me at times. He’s a bottle of pop, sometimes he fizzes and you go, wow.
“Then, for a couple of games, you don’t see him. I hope I’m wrong. I hope he gets some consistency.”
Tottenham’s new No.7 will hope to become a consistent player under Thomas Frank
There is a new buzz around Tottenham following the strong start they have enjoyed to the new season. And Simons’ signing has only added to that, with Frank finally getting a creative player who can build a strong understanding with the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Mathys Tel.
The 22-year-old has showcased his quality in the Bundesliga, but producing goods week in, week out in the Premier League is a different challenge altogether. The versatile attacker will have to become more consistent if he is to become a hit for Spurs and help them compete in multiple competitions this term.
Consistency has been an issue for Simons, and he must work on this under Frank to unlock his true potential.
