Mathys Tel has struggled to make an impact at Tottenham following his permanent switch from Bayern Munich
Tottenham forward Mathys Tel became the club’s first summer signing after the Lilywhites confirmed his loan move had been converted into a permanent one. The Frenchman has not really managed to showcase his talent regularly at N17. And many fans are starting to wonder whether the decision to sign the 20-year-old permanently was the right call or not.
Tel arrived at N17 in January on an initial loan deal until the summer. The talented forward was brought in to provide more cover and depth up front as the North London club was going through an injury crisis at the time. But as time went by, the Frenchman certainly lost his way in the team and looked out of place.
The same trend has continued this season under Thomas Frank. The Danish tactician has opted to play Brennan Johnson instead of the ex-Bayern Munich player in the first three games of the new Premier League season. This clearly indicates that the ex-Brentford boss is still not convinced by Tel’s consistency and impact, despite telling the media that he has full faith in the 20-year-old.
Mathys Tel might not survive at Tottenham under Thomas Frank
Thomas Frank leaving out Mathys Tel from the Champions League squad for the league phase clearly means that the Danish tactician remains unconvinced by the 20-year-old. To make matters worse, the omission from the squad list will certainly not do Tel any favours as his confidence might be shattered. There is a case to be made that the youngster should look to move to pastures new in January for regular game time.
Now, John Wenham also believes that Mathys Tel will look to leave Spurs on a temporary basis if his situation at N17 does not improve. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“The other question has to be asked that with Tel and Odobert being so similar in their style of play, did we need to sign him? I still think £30m for him, when you look at what he’s achieved so far and his relatively young age, it’s still good business.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“But it might be that the January window comes around, and if the situation hasn’t changed, he may have to go on loan and try and get a consistent run of games, because at this time, he needs to be playing. I just don’t see where those opportunities without injuries are going to arise at Tottenham.”

Fans will hope that Mathys Tel is given a fair chance to prove his worth at the north London club. The arrival of Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani will not help his cause in any way, as both players can thrive on the left-flank. And that is exactly where Mathys Tel is expected to be deployed by Thomas Frank this season.
