Atletico Madrid readying a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur next summer
The future of Rodrigo Bentancur at Tottenham Hotspur remains up in the air.
The central midfielder has entered the final year of his contract and that could see the north Londoners lose out an important player of Thomas Frank’s squad if they do not act quickly. The Uruguayan international will be eligible to strike a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1, or he may decide to walk out on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Rodrigo Bentancur has been quick to impress Thomas Frank with his skill-set in the middle of the park. As a result, he has started two of Tottenham’s three Premier League games so far this season, but Frank has now reasons to be concerned about following latest developments.

Atletico Madrid set their sights on Rodrigo Bentancur
Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were showing interest in Bentancur during the summer transfer window, although no verbal contact or bid was tabled. However, it does not look like Atletico Madrid’s interest in the player have faded.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid will seriously consider signing the central midfielder, only if he is available on a free transfer in the summer of 2026. They are not willing to pay a high transfer fee for the 28-year-old, especially when his contract is running down and his renewal isn’t among the top priorities in the Tottenham offices.
From Bentancur’s perspective, he would welcome a move to Los Rojiblancos, having played in Argentina, Italy and England. A switch from Spurs to Diego Simeone’s Atletico would basically be a step up in his career and also provide the South American with his first taste in Spanish football.
However, the aforementioned report adds that the La Liga are likely to consider a move for Bentancur should Conor Gallagher depart. Gallagher is eyeing a return to the Premier League next year, which would then open up a spot in midfield for the club to fill. And for Diego Simeone, the Spurs star would “fit perfectly in the double pivot.”

Tottenham must hand Bentancur a new deal
Reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose John Wenham has backed Tottenham to quickly agree a new deal with Bentancur. The central midfielder is showing the best version of himself in a Tottenham shirt under Frank, having previously struggled with injury problems and inconsistency.
Spurs would definitely not want to lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season. The Uruguayan is becoming one of the first names on Frank’s teamsheet, which is something our club cannot ignore. Bentancur is now firmly in control of his future and may even decide to not continue his career at N17 if Atletico make their interest concrete in him.
All in all, it remains to be seen whether the Hotspur Way chiefs can secure Bentancur’s future at the club and keep him away from Atletico’s clutches.
