Michael Owen believes Tottenham legend should have stayed put at N17; return may be on the cards

Harry Kane’s decision to leave Tottenham might just be a talking point at N17 for years to come

Last season was a campaign that many Tottenham fans will never forget after the club managed to end its long-standing trophy drought against all odds. The Lilywhites ended up going all the way in the Europa League, ensuring the 17-year wait for a major trophy was finally over. Not only that, but winning the competition also ensured Champions League football for the North London club this season.

The cherry on top for the Spurs fans was to see Harry Kane win his first career trophy as well with Bayern Munich. The England international finally managed to get his hands on silverware, after the Bavarian giants ran away with the Bundesliga without any proper competition.

Tottenham legend Harry Kane might just return to N17 in the future.

A lot of questions were asked when the legendary striker decided to leave Spurs for pastures new in 2023. But it was clear to see that the Lilywhites were heading towards a freefall under Daniel Levy. However, Kane had loftier ambitions in mind, and wanted to win a trophy before it got too late. In the end, it looks like the transfer to Bayern Munich worked out well for all parties involved.

Should Harry Kane have stayed at Tottenham to cement his legacy at N17?

A lot of Tottenham fans did wonder why Harry Kane suddenly decided to leave N17 in 2023, since he was so close to breaking the Premier League goal-scoring record at the time. But the fact of the matter is that the England international was linked with a move to pastures new for quite some time, and he did not want to waste his best years fighting for a top four spot to ensure Champions League football.

However, Michael Owen does not agree with the fact that the decision to leave N17 was necessarily the right one. Speaking on talkSPORT, Owen said,

“I thought it was the wrong move. But hey, somebody can look at my career and say you shouldn’t have done this, and shouldn’t have done that. I personally wish he hadn’t gone abroad. I personally wish he had stayed in the Premier League.”

The Liverpool icon added,

“I think he made a couple of decisions that, in hindsight, he would change if he were honest when he retires. If he had stayed in the Premier League, he’d be close to that record already. Whether he’s got time on his side now is a different matter. That remains to be seen.”

Michael Owen believes that Harry Kane made the ‘wrong’ move by leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich at that stage of his career. The ex-Liverpool star also suggests that Kane will look back at that decision in the future and regret that he left the Premier League for the Bundesliga. Not only that, but Owen is also certain that the Spurs legend would have broken the Premier League goal-scoring record if he had stayed, and still hopes that the England international returns to N17 eventually.

To suggest that moving to Germany was the wrong choice seems a little harsh if we are being honest. Harry Kane did what was best for his career after giving his all for Tottenham week in week out. In the end, people will remember his legacy for winning major trophies, and not by breaking any goal-scoring record in one of the top leagues.
