Summer signing ‘surprised’ by Tottenham interest; Decisive push caught London rivals off guard

Tottenham have a superstar on their hands in Mohammed Kudus after the winger gets off to a flying start at N17

It is fair to say that Tottenham shocked the footballing world by bringing in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United. As we all know, both teams do not get along well and had avoided any summer deals since Scott Parker made the switch to N17 in 2011. However, the Lilywhites still managed to pull off a major coup by landing the Ghana international, breaking a 14-year long tradition.

The fact that Kudus took a dig towards West Ham immediately after joining Spurs did not go down well at the London Stadium. Some may argue that the 25-year-old’s statement was childish in nature. Whereas, some Tottenham fans absolutely loved the fact that he decided to pull off a mischief against one of their London rivals.

Tottenham forward Mohammed Kudus is already showing his brilliance under Thomas Frank this season.

And it is also fair to suggest that Kudus has managed to ‘wow’ the Spurs faithful in his first few games donning the Lilywhite jersey. The Ghana international has immediately hit the ground running for the North London club, showcasing his immense talent consistently. He marked his home debut with two assists in the first Premier League game of the season as well.

Mohammed Kudus was not expecting to make a switch to Tottenham

Well, there was a time when Mohammed Kudus was more likely to head to Chelsea early in the summer. The 25-year-old had agreed personal terms with the Blues, and the only thing left to do was for both clubs to reach an agreement. However, Chelsea could not manage to make a deal happen for Kudus after the Hammers rejected their £30m plus Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall swap deal.

As we all know, Tottenham later entered the race for the prolific winger, hoping to see him join the North London club instead. But as per The Athletic, Kudus was ‘surprised’ that the Lilywhites considered making a move for him. Not only that, but the fact that Spurs’ £50m bid was rejected gave the 25-year-old some reassurance that Daniel Levy was serious about signing him.

The aforementioned report also states that Tottenham wanted to avoid any possible hijack, so they asked Kudus to give them some assurance that he would move to N17 once the North London club agreed a transfer fee with West Ham for his signature. The Ghana international obliged and made Spurs his priority, believing that he would get regular gametime under Thomas Frank.

Credit where its due, Daniel Levy and Co. handled this deal superbly and pulled off a major coup when no one was expecting it. Now, Kudus returns to the same ground that cheered the most for him in the previous two seasons. But this time, the Ghana international might have to get used to the loud jeers and boos as he dons the Lilywhite jersey in enemy territory.
