Tottenham Hotspur have bagged the London derby bragging rights by beating West Ham United at the London Stadium. Goals from Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Micky van de Ven in the second half sealed a comprehensive victory at the London Stadium.
Spurs thought they opened the scoring inside the opening 20 minutes via Cristian Romero, but it was disallowed due to a foul. Former Wales international Ashley Williams felt Romero’s goal should have stood and the VAR made a mistake by not interfering to rectify the referee’s mistake. However, it mattered little in the end as goals from Sarr, Bergvall and Van de Ven helped Tottenham continue their strong start to the new Premier League season.
Two of the visitors’ goals came after Tomas Soucek was shown a straight red card following a reckless challenge on Joao Palhinha in the 54th minute. West Ham with a man down only managed to chase shadows then, as Tottenham controlled the game and scored two more goals.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Thomas Frank expressed his happiness with Tottenham’s performance and result at the London Stadium. The Dane felt his team were “dominant” in the game, and the red card to Soucek ten minutes into the second half helped.
“Overall, it was a good performance. Besides two situations in the first half, we didn’t give much away. We had some good crosses into the box, dominated and kept West Ham hemmed in,” Thomas Frank said. (h/t BBC Sport)
“We scored a brilliant goal from a corner. The red card helps, of course, but I felt we were dominant in the game.
“We want to perform and win every game. We can’t look too far ahead, but need to have that little think about it. We’ve been travelling a lot and all the players have done well.
“We need to do well in the Premier League and see if we can compete in all tournaments. I’m happy with the win, now it’s all about the game on Tuesday [in the Champions League].”
Morale-boosting win for Spurs
Spurs’ winning run in the Premier League was punctured by Bournemouth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the players headed for the international break dejected. Returning back after the two-week hiatus, the aim was to get back to winning ways and there was no better game than the London derby vs West Ham.
And Frank’s side showed they were ready for the fight from the first blow of the whistle, dominating large periods of the game. On another day, it could have been more and the scoreline actually flattered Graham Potter’s hapless side. The win means Tottenham have three from four in the league, and our gaffer couldn’t have expected a better start to his life in north London.
