Tottenham Hotspur had been looking to bring in a midfielder all summer transfer window, but the North Londoners could only land Palhinha in that CM/CDM role. And the Lilywhites would not be satisfied, and they would want to bring in a technical face in the second phase, especially given how the Premier League heavyweights have been playing under Thomas Frank.

There was aggressive interest to bring in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, but no move materialised for him, with Oliver Glasner desperate to keep hold of his signatures at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool favourites to Wharton transfer

And now there have been reports from Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur which suggest that Liverpool are the frontrunners for his signature. There also is rival interest from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Real Madrid for the Englishman. And he also states that the 21-year-old has made clear his desire to move to Anfield next year. Crystal Palace are set to demand a fee in the region of £60-70 million.

Wharton has enjoyed a rapid rise since he got on the Eagles’ books. He joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers only in January 2024. But in such a short time he has managed to make himself one of the best technical midfielders in the English top tier. He has already made nearly 50 appearances for his current employers, and that’s only what it took for him to establish himself as a core part of Oliver Glasner’s side.

Tottenham need a technical controller like Wharton

Tottenham Hotspur have liked Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton for a few seasons.

We are already seeing Frank putting on a structure that needs players who can get you more control in the midfield. That is given how Tottenham are often relying on energy rather than rhythm in possession (especially in that second phase).

And with Wharton, you get that passing range complemented by his ability to get out of press quite easily, which makes him a perfect long-term partner to Bergvall. Both of them are capable of anchoring Tottenham’s midfield for the next decade.

TTLB Opinion

The thing is, Liverpool are the clear favourites. But given the capacity that he possesses, Tottenham should not let this opportunity slip slide.

If you give the Dane head coach Wharton, you suddenly get a silky midfielder who can sustain his structural system quite easily. He looks ready to be part of a Champions League-level squad. And if Vanai wants to prove that Tottenham have now entered a new era of ambition, then competing with Liverpool for Wharton would send the clearest message since signing Xavi Simons.
