Lucas Bergvall is enjoying life under Thomas Frank right now after playing a crucial role in the Dane’s system. Like many other players in the squad, the Sweden international is operating in a different position for the Lilywhites. And it is fair to say that the 19-year-old is playing his best football in a Spurs shirt since he joined the club last year.
Thomas Frank is known for bringing out the best in his players and develop different sides to their game. He did this numerous times during his spell at Brentford, most noticeably with Bryan Mbeumo and Mikel Damsgaard. And now he is doing the same at N17 with the likes of Bergvall and Brennan Johnson. The players are also enjoying a new role under the Danish tactician as they look to build on the Europa League success.
Some may also say that Thomas Frank is being forced to play some players out of position due to the injury crisis at the club. The Lilywhites are without James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, with both players forced to be on the sidelines due to long-term injuries.

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall is enjoying a brilliant week after playing a crucial role in helping the team get over the line against West Ham and Villarreal. The 19-year-old has managed to add goal involvements to his game this season, showcasing a different side to his all-round game. Credit where its due, the decision to play the Swede in the #10 role has proven to be a masterstroke by Thomas Frank.
The Spurs midfielder has now shared light on his tasks as an attacking midfielder under Thomas Frank. Speaking in his post-match presser after the UCL game, Bergvall told Hayters TV,
“Yes definitely [been working on it], especially when Mo [Kudus] gets the ball, to run in behind. The goal I scored last game against West Ham, to make the run in behind when the centre half can ping it.”
The 19-year-old added,
“There is space there [to run into] and we can score goals. Of course, I always want the ball but when I play as a 10, as I do now, we need those runs forward. Last year I played as a six and an eight but this year I’m in the 10 and need to do those runs.”
Lucas Bergvall suggested that he is working to get better in the #10 role by trying to make third-man runs into the box whenever there is an opening. The Spurs midfielder pointed out that he largely played either as a #8, or a #6 last season, so he is still learning how to be impactful in the final third of the pitch.
If you notice, Bergvall’s goal against West Ham United earlier this week was a result of making a late run into the box. The Sweden international saw Romero with the ball on the halfway line and decided to run behind the centre-backs into the empty space. The ball from Romero was timed excellently, leaving the 19-year-old unmarked with a free header. And the midfielder’s brilliant finish helped Spurs increase their lead in the second half.
Fans will hope that Lucas Bergvall continues his good form and showcases his talent and potential on the biggest stage this season.
