BBC pundit fears Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore is now in a toxic environment at Rangers amid Russell Martin sack claim
Tottenham Hotspur’s academy star Mikey Moore sealed a season-long loan move to Rangers at the start of August, with no obligation or option to buy.
The teenager has made 21 appearances for the Lilywhites since making his first-team debut in October 2024, during a Premier League clash against Manchester City. When he made his debut vs Man City, the winger became the youngest ever player to represent Tottenham in the English top-flight.
Rangers managed to beat off interest from several to secure the Spurs talent’s signature. Mikey Moore would have been aiming to gain valuable first-team experience at the iconic Ibrox and showcase his talent in the Champions League. However, things have just not gone according to the plan for the youngster as the Gers dropped to the Europa League after being smashed 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off.
Chris Sutton makes claim on Mikey Moore’s time at Rangers so far
Rangers boss Russell Martin has come under fire for a barren run of shocking performances. The 39-year-old is struggling to get the Gers out of a rut, managing just four points from the opening five games. This has tested the patience of the Ibrox faithful- the majority of them want Rangers to sack Russell Martin and replace him with Barry Ferguson.
The chaotic situation at Rangers has had a negative impact of the squad, including Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore. This may have rung the alarm bells at the Tottenham offices over the young talent’s situation in Glasgow, with Martin under incredible pressure after failing to buy a win across five Scottish Premiership games thus far.
BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has now suggested that he was excited to see Moore dazzle in a Rangers shirt. But, he feels the club is now a ‘toxic’ place to be in for players, with youngsters like Moore ultimately paying the price for a dismal start to the season.
“It’s a really difficult place to play. Rangers have recruited a fair few young players, and the environment to play in is toxic,” Chris Sutton told BBC Radio Five Live’s Monday Night Club (h/t The Scottish Sun).
“Another player who’s gone to Rangers from down south, who I was really excited about, to see how he’d do, Mikey Moore, the young Tottenham talent.
“I think from the cameos we’ve seen of him, you’re thinking ‘blimey’. I really feel sorry for the young players because they are carrying such a burden on their shoulders, and these are young players; it’s affecting their careers.
“It will be interesting to see whether they can come back from that.”
Tottenham must act if situation doesn’t impact at Rangers
Many Rangers fans have seen enough of Martin and feel the club are just delaying the inevitable. Martin has overseen Rangers’ worst start to a league season for 47 years. The Glasgow giants have failed to win any of their first five Premiership matches and are languishing in 10th position in the table.
Slowly but steadily, part of the fanbase have also started turning against the players for for the dismal start to the campaign. This has apparently had an impact on Moore’s form, which should concern the chiefs at Hotspur Way. Plus, the Rangers boss has not really fancied the England youth international, limiting his opportunities off the bench.
That said, if the overall situation around Rangers does not improve, Spurs must definitely consider terminating Moore’s loan and recalling him as early as possible.
