Tottenham’s search for a new attacking midfielder goes on as the club prepares to compete hard on all four fronts this season. The Lilywhites were in the hunt for a new #10 all summer after James Maddison ruptured his ACL during the pre-season tour. The England international’s abrupt injury meant that the North London club were forced to sign a replacement quickly.
And many Spurs fans thought they did just that after landing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig before the transfer window shut. The Netherlands international’s arrival at N17 led many to believe that Thomas Frank had managed to find himself a new attacking midfielder. Even Simons suggested in an interview that he thrives in the #10 role.
However, the 22-year-old was utilised on the left-flank by Thomas Frank in the last two games, with Lucas Bergvall playing as an attacking midfielder instead. The North London club did not face any major complications despite this tactical change. But Spurs cannot continue this gimmick in the long-run if they want to build on their Europa League success this season.

There is no surprise that Tottenham tried to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers in the summer. The Lilywhites viewed the England international as an ideal replacement of James Maddison for this season. And Thomas Frank also tried all the tricks in the book to land the 23-year-old. However, Villa did not budge, with the club pricing out Spurs before a move could materialise.
It was also reported earlier this month that the Villans are in no rush to sell Rogers in January as well. The Birmingham-based club is facing PSR issues, but they do intend to lose one of their best players midway through the season. The aforementioned report also stated that the Premier League outfit have put a £100m price tag to price out any potential suitors.
To make matters worse, the Lilywhites have received yet another blow in their pursuit of Rogers. As per Express, the Aston Villa star does not have a release clause in his contract, giving the Villans all the ammunition to keep hold of him in the winter. But the possibility of losing the 23-year-old next summer looks realistic, especially if Unai Emery fails to turn the club’s fortunes around.
It looks like the Lilywhites will miss out on Rogers in January. With Bentancur facing a potential exit and Bissouma leaving for pastures new in the winter, Spurs will need to find an alternate target quickly before it gets too late.
