Destiny Udogie’s performance for Tottenham against Brighton highlighted his importance in the team
There was a clear improvement down the left-flank during Tottenham’s game against Brighton in the Premier League. That is mainly down to the fact that Thomas Frank had heard all the concerns and started Destiny Udogie instead of Djed Spence against the Seagulls. Despite the hard-fought draw where most players failed to perform consistently, Udogie rose high and was head and shoulders clear of any other Spurs player on the pitch.
The Italy international showed glimpses of his potential and reminded fans that he is still a very good defender. He always got the better of his opponent, and managed to make an impact on both ends of the field. It is clear to see that Spurs are a better team with the talented full-back in the starting eleven.

His relationship with Van de Ven at the back, as well as, his ability to involve Odobert in the game made life easier for Thomas Frank. As per Sofascore, the 22-year-old completed 89% of his passes against Brighton, winning three of the seven ground duels that he contested for. The full-back’s all-round performance highlighted how important he is to the team as they aim to build on the Europa League success.
Tottenham star Destiny Udogie touted as one of Premier League’s best full-backs
Tottenham fans will be pleased to see Thomas Frank opt for Destiny Udogie for the Lilywhites’ game against Brighton. The Italy international is clearly a better option than Djed Spence on the left, considering that the 22-year-old is naturally left-footed. Also, Udogie’s work-rate and his ability to make an impact higher up the field is also something that gives him the edge over Spence.
John Wenham has also taken the opportunity to heap praise on the Italian for his strong display against Brighton. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“I still think Udogie is a little bit better than Spence when he is fully fit in firing. The fullback that we saw linked with Manchester City earlier in the summer, if you remember, that’s the level he can be, in my opinion.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“I think Udogie’s first season was absolutely phenomenal at Tottenham, and he was rewarded by becoming Italy’s left back. He’s had a couple of injuries since, but I think when you get him back to full form, he’s one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. And I think he’s the best left back for Italy as well.”
John Wenham shares the same sentiment as the Tottenham fans when he claims that Destiny Udogie should be the first-choice left-back for the club. The Lilywhite Rose owner clearly holds the Italian in high regards, suggesting that he is one of the best full-backs in the league on his day. Not only that, but Wenham also points out Udogie’s impressive first season at N17, when he showed week in week out how good he could be.
As John Wenham righty points out, there is a reason why Manchester City were keen on signing Udogie in the summer. The Italy international clearly has an element in his game that makes him standout during matches. Now it is on Thomas Frank to bring the best out of the 22-year-old and help him reach his true potential at N17.
