Tottenham have Kevin Danso waiting in the wings to step in for Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven
A summer signing that went under the radar at Tottenham was of Kevin Danso. The Lilywhites decided to buy the Austria international permanently after his impressive stint at N17 last season whilst on loan. It is fair to say that Danso won over the Spurs faithful last season after playing a crucial role in ensuring that the north London club went all the way in the Europa League against all odds.
However, the 27-year-old has not yet gotten the chance to prove his worth under Thomas Frank just yet. The prolific centre-back has played just 11 minutes in the Premier League this season, highlighting the obvious fact that he is currently playing as second fiddle to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at the heart of the defence.
The Lilywhites are also looking defensively resolute this season, keeping four clean sheets in opening five games. The strong performances by both Romero and Van de Ven have not forced Thomas Frank to make any massive changes in the backline, leaving Danso to watch from the side-lines for now.
Kevin Danso will get a chance to prove himself at Tottenham under Thomas Frank
Tottenham’s injury crisis at the back last season meant that Ange Postecoglou was forced to play squad players during crucial games. That is where Danso managed to gain regular gametime for the Lilywhites, replacing Cristian Romero in the line-up. As per Sofascore, the Austrian played 15 games for the Lilywhites during the second half of the season, registering an average rating of 7.02.
However, this season has been a different experience altogether for the 27-year-old, with the defender not getting regular minutes. But John Wenham has still backed Danso to find his way into the team as the season progresses. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“Danso never lets you down. He’s liked by the squad, he’s liked by the fans. The issue he’s got this season is that we’re on four clean sheets out of five.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“We’ve got two world-class centre-backs in front of him, who are injury-free at the moment. But when the opportunity arrives, I’ve got no doubt in Danso to come in and perform well. His throws are such a danger.”
John Wenham is a big fan of Kevin Danso, stating that the defender is well-liked by everyone at the club. The Lilywhite Rose owner, however, admits that the 27-year-old might find regular minutes hard to come by due to Romero and Van de Ven’s excellent start to the season. But Wenham backs the Austrian to impress Thomas Frank once he gets an opportunity to feature for Spurs as the season progresses.
The North London club faces Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup 3rd round next week. This will be the perfect opportunity for Frank to see how the squad players perform during competitive games. The game could not have come at a better time for Kevin Danso as well. The 27-year-old will look to make an impression and force Thomas Frank to think twice before benching the Austrian again.
