Tottenham are plotting a big-money swoop for Sporting CP skipper Morten Hjulmand
Tottenham Hotspur made some exciting signings during the summer transfer window and backed their new boss Thomas Frank.
Thomas Frank has made a strong start to life at N17, quickly getting his ideas across to the players. It is not just the collective that has improved, as several individuals have also stepped up. And Joao Palhinha has been one of them.
Having arrived on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, Joao Palhinha has quickly become a key cog in Thomas Frank’s system. With his defensive prowess, physicality and reading of the game, the Portuguese enforcer is now one of the first names on the teamsheet. However, it looks like the Spurs boss wants to add more bite and tenacity to his midfield.

Tottenham preparing January swoop for Sporting CP star
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham are planning to table a €60 million offer for Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand in the January transfer window. Frank believes the Sporting CP skipper could be ‘key’ to his team’s engine room.
After arriving from Lecce in the summer of 2023, Morten Hjulmand has gone from strength to strength at Sporting CP. In just two seasons, the Denmark international has become the Portuguese club’s captain, and his value is now double than the figure that was paid to Lecce.
The 26-year-old’s consistent performances in the Lions; title-winning campaigns over the past two years has unsurprisingly gone unnoticed across Europe, with Tottenham keen to secure his services at the start of the New Year. Morten Hjulmand still has three years left on his contract, so it would not be easy for Spurs to persuade Sporting to part ways with him.
However, the aforementioned report adds Sporting are aware that a move to the Premier League could be an ‘irresistible’ opportunity for their skipper.

Hjulmand has qualities to thrive in Frank’s system
Having blossomed into one of the best holding midfielders in Europe in the last couple of years, Hjulmand looks like he could fit the bill perfectly at Tottenham. The ex-Lecce man will add quality to the squad but also provide a strong rotation option from time to time. He has the qualities on and off the ball to thrive in Frank’s system and challenge Palhinha for a spot in the first XI.
At 26, the Dane is entering the prime stages of his career and would be tempted by the prospect of playing in the Premier League. At Spurs, he’d get an opportunity to compete with exciting talents and also play in the Champions League. It would be interesting to see if the Lilywhites go as far as making a €60 million offer for Hjulmand when the transfer window reopens in January.
With both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr set to head for the AFCON in mid-December, Frank would be inclined to sign a new midfielder. And the Dane connection might just work out in the New Year and Spurs get their man in Hjulmand in the winter window.
