Tottenham Hotspur could bring Dennis Cirkin back to N17 from Sunderland in January
Tottenham Hotspur are considering a January move for Dennis Cirkin as they look to solve their home-grown quota issue in European competition. Sources suggest the Sunderland left-back, who came through Spurs’ academy, could make a surprise return to North London.
Thomas Frank was forced to submit a reduced 22-man squad for the Champions League after Spurs were unable to meet the required home-grown quota. The omission of Mathys Tel caused debate among supporters, but ultimately it highlighted the logistical problem Spurs face when building a squad packed with overseas quality.
Bringing Cirkin back would help to solve that issue without weakening Frank’s options elsewhere. As a product of Hotspur Way, the 23-year-old would automatically qualify as a home-grown player, giving Spurs more flexibility when naming squads in Europe and domestically.

Cirkin’s Spurs roots could boost return possibility
Cirkin has quietly built an impressive reputation since leaving Tottenham for Sunderland. According to TBR Football, with his contract at the Stadium of Light set to expire in less than a year, Spurs could secure him on a cut-price deal in January.
Back in 2019, then-manager José Mourinho described Cirkin as “quality,” and the full-back has since proven his ability with consistent performances in the Championship. At just 23, he still has room to grow, and a return to Spurs would represent both a practical squad solution and an emotional homecoming for an academy graduate who was once highly rated at the club.

From a Tottenham perspective, this move makes a lot of sense. Cirkin may not walk straight into the starting XI ahead of Destiny Udogie, but as a reliable back-up and home-grown option, he could solve multiple issues in one go. Squad management is as important as star signings when competing in Europe, and Frank will know the value of adding players who tick both the footballing and logistical boxes.
If Spurs can get Cirkin back on favourable terms, it would be a clever, forward-thinking move that strengthens the squad without disrupting the long-term project. Sometimes the smartest signings are not the flashy ones, and this could be one of those moments.
