Tottenham are eyeing a move for Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas after failing in their pursuit of Manchester City star Savinho
Tottenham Hotspur showed a lot of grit and character to bounce back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend. It was a testament to the north Londoners’ improving mentality.
Spurs were busy in the summer transfer window and made seven signings to back their new boss Thomas Frank. However, they failed to land a replacement for club icon Son Heung-min, who decided to end his time at N17 and spend the twilight of his career in the riches of MLS. A lot of questions were being asked of former chairman Daniel Levy when he could not sign a replacement for Son in the summer.
Tottenham notably made several attempts to sign Manchester City winger Savinho in the transfer window. Savinho had agreed personal terms with the Lilywhites, making it clear to Manchester City that he was interested in joining Thomas Frank’s forces. However, a move failed to materialise as the Sky Blues felt the need to keep the Brazilian in order to keep the squad’s depth intact.
Tottenham switch focus to Sevilla winger
Now, even after the summer window is long done and dusted, Tottenham have seemingly not given up on their hopes to land Savinho. They are working behind the scenes to test Man City’s resolve for the young winger in the January transfer window. As it is believed that the Cityzens would not sanction the Brazilian international’s exit in the winter window either, the Lilywhites have switched their focus elsewhere.
According to Football Insider’s senior transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham are considering a move to sign Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas. The Switzerland international has emerged as one of the names on the north London club’s radar to strengthen in the wide areas.
However, Frank is understood to be happy with his current options and does not consider signing a winger in January as a priority. Instead, the Dane will prioritise reinforcing other areas of the pitch in the New Year, Pete O’Rourke adds.
“It’s an interesting one. Spurs tried for Savinho in the summer, but weren’t able to get a deal done as City blocked that,” O’Rourke said on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
“Vargas is a player who’s done really well for Sevilla, Swiss international as well. So, he’s obviously, I think, attracting interest from a number of clubs, not just Tottenham.
“Spurs are quite well-stocked out wide after they got a deal done for Simons, who plays in the same position as Vargas. They’ve also got Odobert, Tel and even Richarlison who can play out wide, so I don’t think it’s a priority for Tottenham to be signing another wide player.
“Vargas is a good player, he’s under contract at Sevilla until 2029, so they’re going to demand a decent fee as well for the winger. So, as I said, I don’t think it’s a priority for Tottenham in the January window, so while Vargas has emerged on their radar, it’s not a move Spurs will be pushing for in January.”
Tottenham to push Ruben Vargas move to next summer?
Vargas has enjoyed a bright start to the 2025/26 season. He has bagged a goal and three assists in four games for Sevilla already this season, catching the attention of Tottenham, who could splash the cash on new faces in January.
It is easy to understand why the Lilywhites are so keen to get the Swiss ace in their team. After the departure of Son, they naturally need another disruptive winger to make their attack more unpredictable. This makes the Sevilla man a natural target for them, especially due to his speed, directness, dynamism and goalscoring ability that he has shown in the Bundesliga and La Liga.
For now, Frank will juggle Brennan Johnson, Mathys Tel, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Randal Kolo Muani to cover both flanks. O’Rourke says Frank feels he has enough options in wide areas to compete throughout the season, unless Spurs sustain an injury or two. As a result, it looks like we could push Vargas’ signing until the summer.
