Tottenham star Brennan Johnson suddenly finds himself out of reckoning under Thomas Frank
Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson made history last season by scoring the only goal in the club’s Europa League final clash against Manchester United. The decisive goal meant that the Lilywhites ended their long-standing trophy drought against all odds. And it also etched the Welshman’s name in the North London club’s history books.
After everything that the 24-year-old went through at the start of last season, it is fair to say that the prolific forward deserved to end the campaign on a high. Johnson ended up being the top-scorer for the Lilywhites last season, scoring 18 goals in all competitions for Ange’s team. And it is fair to say that many fans expected the Wales international to continue the same momentum under Thomas Frank this season.

However, it has not quite worked out for the Spurs No.22 under Frank, despite scoring two goals in the first two Premier League games this season. His poor display against Bournemouth before the international break meant that Johnson lost his place in the starting eleven under Thomas Frank, with the 24-year-old only playing 41 minutes for Tottenham in their last three games in all competitions.
Brennan Johnson needs to step up to earn his place at Tottenham
There is a sudden shift in Brennan Johnson’s trajectory at Tottenham after the Welshman finds himself out of the starting eleven under Thomas Frank this season. The 24-year-old has not quite managed to make an impact on the left-flank, forcing the Danish tactician to play Xavi Simons or Wilson Odobert in that position. Fans will hope that this is just a blip in form for Johnson and not anything serious.
Bryan King, on the other hand, believes that the Welshman will get opportunities to impress Thomas Frank in the coming months. Speaking to Tottenham News, King says,
“There’s going to be enough games coming up and I’m sure he (Johnson) is going to be used. You don’t go from being hero to villain in the space of one summer. I think Johnson will certainly be used more without any shadow of a doubt.”
The ex-scout adds,
“He’s built his career up at Tottenham. He’s done well and he’s taken his chances. It’s just a question of finding out when Frank can slot each player in.”
Bryan King suggests that Brennan Johnson’s lack of gametime under Thomas Frank is not a cause of concern. The ex-scout believes that there is no chance for the Welshman to suddenly be out of Thomas Frank’s project, adding that he will get opportunities to impress the Danish tactician. King points out that the Spurs manager is still figuring out how to utilise his squad effectively, hinting that the Dane will find a way to integrate the 24-year-old.
There is a strong possibility that Brennan Johnson gets the nod over other forward for Spurs’ upcoming game against Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup. This will be a good chance for the Welshman to show his capabilities. And hopefully the 24-year-old does enough against the League One outfit to force his way into the starting eleven for next weekend’s Premier League clash against Wolves.
