Tottenham Hotspur wanted to bring in a new attacking midfielder in the recently concluded summer transfer window. And the North Londoners were quite aggressively looking at Argentine talent Nico Paz, with approaches of over seventy-odd million made for his signature. But despite all the approaches, no move for him amounted to anything, given that Real Madrid holds an iron grip on the midfielder’s future and he is surely looking Los Blancos’ way.

Now, now, Chelsea are said to be looking to move for the Argentine sensation, according to Caught Offside. But the Lilywhites faithful would know all too well how complicated a deal to bring the Como starlet really is.

Why did Tottenham walk away from the Paz pursuit?

Como rejected Tottenham approaches for Nico Paz

Real Madrid are said to have inserted a favourable buy-back clause into the original deal that took Paz to Como. And this clause in itself gives Xabi Alonso & Co. the power to secure his signatures for as little as €10 million. And this had left Tottenham with no chance of competing, given how Paz also has his mind set on moving to the Spanish giants. So even though Tottenham came closer to Paz’ €80 million valuation.

And for Tottenham, keeping him on as a priority target became a risk. Given that the North Londoners could have pursued his signatures all summer, offering a marquee fee, but then Madrid could have just swooped for him for a fee barely near to that.

Chelsea hope to push before Madrid can strike

Reports insist that the Blues are hoping to strike for Paz’s signature before Madrid can make their move.

But as Tottenham discovered last summer, any possible transfer is near impossible unless Real Madrid were to step aside. But that’s highly unlikely given how Madrid already rate him quite highly. The only way is if Paz signs a new contract with his current employers, but that also could only come if the Spanish giants are willing to let go of their buyback clause. But if that were to happen (even if it’s a long shot), Chelsea would suddenly see competition coming in from all around Europe for his signature.

While Chelsea remain optimistic for now, Tottenham know all about where this is going when push comes to shove.
